Friend can’t stop throwing jealous jabs

Dear Annie: I have a problem that feels small when I say it out loud, but it is starting to take up way too much space in my head. I have a close friend, “Megan,” who has quietly turned into the scorekeeper of our friendship. She keeps tabs on everything. If I take two hours to text back, she will say, “Wow, must be nice to be busy,” with a little smile that makes it hard to call her on it. If I do not “like” a photo she posts, she will bring it up later like a joke, except it does not feel like a joke. If I spend time with another friend, she will say something like, ...

When spraying a baking pan

Dear Heloise: I bake a lot of bread to give as gifts. I use nonstick cooking spray to grease my loaf pans. My husband suggested that I open the dishwasher and spray the pans over the top rack. This way, it’s easy and clean! -- Marian B., in New Orleans PHYSICAL NEWSPAPERS Dear Heloise: For Marvin Tiffany of York, Nebraska, I agree about missing the old days when an actual print newspaper arrived at the house in the morning. Here in our part of Oregon, I can get the local paper by mail three days a week, and it costs a fortune. I think the price of paper, the cost of home ...

Wife and husband torn on family’s future

Dear Annie: My wife and I have been married eight years and we have two young kids. They are my whole world. I love being a dad in a way I did not expect. I am the one who volunteers for bedtime stories, who gets up early on Saturdays so my wife can sleep, who actually enjoys the chaos of backpacks, snack cups and little shoes that disappear. Here is the problem. I want a third child and my wife does not. We used to talk about having “a big family” when we were dating, but after our second baby, something shifted for her. She loves our kids, but she says she feels done. She talks ...

Maintaining the spare tire pressure

Dear Heloise: I was feeling curious, so I checked the air pressure in the spare tire of an SUV that I bought four years ago. I had never even looked to see where the spare was stored, which was under a floor panel in the back. I discovered that it was functionally flat and would have been absolutely useless in an emergency. Accordingly, I urge everyone to monitor and maintain every vehicle’s proper spare tire pressure. -- Jim R., in Houston ROUGH TOWEL FIX Dear Heloise: Regarding the inquiry of what to do about rough towels: After our traditional washing machine finally gave out ...

A painful story taken without permission

Dear Annie: I’m a senior citizen. Fifty years ago, another young girl and I were in a juvenile detention facility for very minor infractions that would not lead to incarceration today. I was repeatedly raped by two counselors throughout our months there. This other girl was not mistreated in any way because she was related to the spouse of one of the administrators. We’re not good friends but have stayed in touch over the years because of this shared experience. She’s talked off and on about writing/publishing an autobiography, which I’ve encouraged. Recently, I met someone in ...
