SMSU Chorale to perform

1 min read

The SMSU Chorale will present their annual fall concert at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Lutheran Church of Marshall. Entitled “The Promise of a Nation,” the program explores the American experience from a variety of different perspectives.

According to Dr. Stephen Kingsbury, SMSU director of Choral Activities, “The genesis of the performance came from Randall Thompson's dramatic 'Testament of Freedom,' which sets of the words of Thomas Jefferson as he expressed his thoughts about the creation of our nation, both in letters and more formalized writings. Over the course of the afternoon, we will move from Amy Beach's 'Song of Welcome,' a powerful declaration of hospitality and welcome that was written for the opening of the of the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition held in Omaha, Nebraska in 1898, through songs of the American Revolution to the work of Aaron Copland, which epitomizes a uniquely American compositional sound. Along the way, we will also explore the music of the African-American choral tradition, music from celebrated Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate, as well as that of Carlos Cordero, who immigrated to the U.S from Venezuela.”

The performance is free and open to the public.
