MANKATO - The Southwest Minnesota State women’s soccer team (1-6-2, 1-4-1 NSIC) suffered a 6-0 setback to Minnesota State on Sunday afternoon.
Minnesota State finished the match with a 25-8 advantage in shots and held a 12-3 edge in shots on goal. The Mavericks also recorded 11 corner kicks compared to none for SMSU.
Kennady Krebs made five saves in goal for the Mustangs, including one in the first half and four after halftime. Minnesota State goalkeeper Lauren McAlpine recorded three saves to earn the shutout.
Sophia Wilson led SMSU with two shots, both on goal, while Janae Kayser also recorded two shots. Jada Backes had one shot on goal.
Minnesota State opened the scoring in the ninth minute when Amara Smith converted a penalty kick to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Reese Hilsenbeck added a goal in the 18th minute, assisted by Maddix Archer, as Minnesota State took a 2-0 advantage into halftime.
The Mavericks added four goals in the second half, beginning with another penalty kick goal from Maddix Archer in the 48th minute. Marin Johnson scored in the 57th minute with assists from Hilsenbeck and Archer before Savanna Stockness found the net less than two minutes later, assisted by Johnson and Meghan Sullivan. Abby Hoiska capped the scoring in the 74th minute with an assist from Lauren Schindler.
SMSU returns to Mattke Field on Friday, Oct. 2, at 3 p.m. against Northern State.
