TRACY– The Marshall A’s dominated the Tracy Engineers in the opener of the season 15-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The A’s came out on fire in the first inning scoring six runs including a three run home by the newest addition to the team Hunter Wienhoff, giving Marshall a comfortable lead after the top of the 1st inning.

The Engineers were never able to recover from that.

In the next inning Tracy’s Nick Schmitt hit an RBI single and put the Engineers on the board. However, it would be the only run scored for the team and Frederickson had the only other hit for the Engineers.

The A’s also added Chase Douglas who singled and scored a run in the contest. Peyton Grant and Connor Neubeck also homered in the victory.

Tracy committed multiple errors and had a alot of balls lost in the sun, extending innings throughout the game.

Charlie Jacobson pitched two innings of relief and allowed no runs and struck out four. Mitchell Bouwman also pitched for the A’s in relief and he took allowed no runs on the contest. Wienhoff finished with four hits and drove in four runs as the winning pitcher. He also threw four innings allowing one run and two hits. Neubeck had two hits and scored two runs. Resnick also had two hits and drove in two RBIs.

Both teams are not at full strength as they’re awaiting more players to join the team after the prep season of baseball is finished.

Marshall off to a good start with a win and have more depth this year with pitching and players in the field. Manager Ryan Schwagel spoke on team’s win, more depth and having fun this season.

“Just playing baseball feels good,” Schwagel said. “It was a nice opening day. We just knew we needed to hit the ball and everyone showed up to play today. Wienhoff is a bulldog on the mound and he just crushed a pitch for a home run. Douglas speed on the bases will be a plus and Seth Resnick had a great day at the plate. It’s good to see. It feels good to just sit back and coach the team. Not having to play this year is a good feeling. If we keep throwing strikes and hit the ball, then we’ll be in a lot of games. We are going to take some lumps but we are looking forward to a great season.”

The Tracy Engineers have a young squad and look forward to growing together as a team. Despite the loss, manager Dan Scamp saw some positives he can take out of the game.

“Encouraging things I saw was Frederikson pitching coming off his ACL injury last year, ” Scamp said.” He could be a really good arm for us throughout the year so that was nice to see. Also encouraging that Schmitt playing in his first amateur baseball game, getting a RBI single, that was really nice. Getting some of the young guys in to play was really encouraging. Marshall is a very good team. We need to work on staying within ourselves and make the routine plays. We can’t throw the ball around as it cost us runs in the 1st and 7th innings. Staying within ourselves will go a long way.”

While the Tracy Engineers will be back in action today as they host the Milroy Yankees. The first pitch is at 1:30 p.m.
