SMSU head football coach Scott Underwood announces retirement effective immediately; Levi Bullerman named interim head coach

MARSHALL - Southwest Minnesota State University head football coach, Scott Underwood, has announced his retirement on Sunday, effective immediately. SMSU Vice President of Athletics, Travis Whipple, has named SMSU defensive coordinator, Levi Bullerman, as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Underwood, the 11th head coach in team history, was in his fifth season on the Mustang sidelines and retires after serving as a head coach at the Division II level for 17 seasons. Tigers struggle offensively in road loss to Willmar

WILLMAR — On a dreary Friday night, Marshall football hit the road for its first away game of the season, taking on Willmar and falling by a score of 34-14. In a matchup Marshall head coach Terry Bahlmann knew would be a test, the Tigers struggled to generate offense. Marshall finished with 67 passing yards and 75 rushing yards. Sam Meier scored both of the Tigers’ touchdowns. Defensively, Tyler Kraft led Marshall with six tackles. The Tigers will return to action Sept. 25 with another road test against Hutchinson. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Backes buries two goals to pace Mustangs to road victory

MOORHEAD - Jada Backes scored a pair of second half goals, while Madelyn Cory made five saves, to lead Southwest Minnesota State to a 2-0 victory over MSU Moorhead in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women’s soccer on Sunday afternoon. Sophia Wilson had a pair of assists to help SMSU earn its first victory of the season to improve to 1-4-2 overall, 1-2-1 NSIC. MSU Moorhead drops to 2-3-2 overall, 1-2-1 NSIC. Vikings battle past Central Minnesota Christian in five sets

PRINSBURG — It took five hard-fought sets, but Minneota volleyball came away with a road victory over Central Minnesota Christian, improving to 2-0 in conference play and 8-2 overall. The Vikings took the opening set 25-18 before CM Christian evened the match with a 25-23 win in the second. Minneota regained the lead with a 25-18 victory in the third, but the Bluejays forced a deciding fifth set by taking the fourth 25-17. Lakeview football falls to RTR in 3 overtimes

COTTONWOOD — It took three overtimes and nearly three hours to determine a winner Thursday night, as RTR eventually came away with an 8-0 victory over Lakeview in a hard-fought defensive battle. “That was an outstanding game played tonight,” Lakeview head coach Scott Hanson said. “Both teams had opportunities the whole game but could not get it in the end zone until the third overtime.” Despite the loss, Hanson said the Lakers continued to show toughness and grit throughout the game, pointing to the team’s effort and ability to work together. Blackjacks roll past LQPV with 400-yard offensive effort

DAWSON - After racking up over 400 yards of offense, Dawson-Boyd football was able to dominate Lac que Parle Valley en route to a 35-8 win. Quarterback Carson Stratmoen put together an incredible game in the air, going 8-9 on throws on the way to 142 yards and a touchdown. Four of Stratmoen's completions went to Jaxton Hastad, who went for 104 receiving yards in the game, hauling in Stratmoen's lone touchdown pass Colten Bothun led the Blackjacks in rushing with seven carries for 127 yards, three of which carries went for touchdowns.
