MARSHALL - The Southwest Minnesota State University wrestling team competes in its first open tournament this weekend, competing in the RCTC Yellowjacket Open in Rochester, Minn., beginning at 10 a.m.
Coach Chayse Jackson, in his sixth season at SMSU, sends 22 athletes to compete on Saturday in both the freshman/sophomore division and the open division.
SMSU coming off a 3-12 season in 2025-26, with a 2-8 NSIC record, earning wins over Minot State and Jamestown. Jackson returns 18 letter winners from last season's squad.
The Mustangs, who kicked off the season on Oct. 24 with the annual Brown & Gold exhibition dual, begin regular season dual action next week against Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Thursday, Nov. 12, before competing at the Grand View (Iowa) Open the following Saturday. SMSU hosts a tri-dual against Saint John's and Itasca C.C. on Wednesday, Nov. 18.
