Lancers continue to improve as postseason nears

By Daniel Lins 2 min read

REDWOOD FALLS -- The Canby cross country teams continued to show improvement Friday at Redwood Golf Course, with four runners earning top-20 finishes and several others recording personal-best times.

Mya Pesek led the way for the Canby girls, finishing fifth in the varsity race. Taylor Ourada followed in 10th, while Adri Christianson placed 12th to give the Lancers three top-20 finishers.

Pesek and Ourada both turned in season-best performances, while Christianson, Finley VanOverbeke, Cayleigh Bordewyk, Sophie Becker and Anna Briggs each recorded personal-best times.

With the postseason approaching, Canby coach Allyson Pesek said the continued improvement has been an encouraging sign.

"Seeing those times continue to drop this late in the season is a great indication of the work these kids are putting in every day," Pesek said.

On the boys side, Tallen Merritt led the Lancers with a 20th-place finish, earning the final top-20 spot.

Merritt also recorded a personal-best performance, joining teammates Kendon Knutson, Seth Paluch, Tate Frazeur, Henry Vidoloff and Jasper Pochardt in setting personal records.

"Those are some really fun improvements to see as we enter the most important parts of our season," Pesek said.

Friday’s meet came during a busy stretch for Canby, which competed twice during the week. Despite the demanding schedule, the Lancers continued to compete against strong competition and showed they are ready for the final stretch of the season.

"It was another really positive day for our team," Pesek said. "Running two meets during the week can be tough, but we were able to compete against some strong competition yesterday and showed that we are ready to race."

With roughly four weeks remaining in the season, Canby is beginning to turn its attention toward the conference and section meets.

"October is here, and that means we are getting closer to the Conference and Section meets," Pesek said. "There is still a lot of work to do, but we are excited about where this group is headed."
