WABASSO -- The No. 4 Wabasso Rabbits' undefeated start to the season continued on Friday night as they picked up a 28-16 win over No. 9 New Ulm Cathedral to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Wabasso trailed 8-6 after the first quarter, but Drew Kemp completed a 19-yard touchdown to Brooks Baune early in the second to take a lead that the Rabbits retained for the remainder of the game.
Baune also ran in a three-yard touchdown in the third to build the lead to 20-8, and Kemp answered a Cathedral touchdown with a 29-yard touchdown pass to Nolan Leopold to bring the score to 28-16.
Kemp finished the day with 249 passing yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions after completing 17 of his 28 pass attempts. Leopold was the team's leading receiver with seven catches for 130 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and Baune hauled in four of his five targets for 68 yards.
Baune also led the Rabbits' rushing attack with nine carries for 28 yards, and Kemp ran the ball three times for 27 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Baune and Caden Frerickseach contributed nine total tackles and Joe Rohlik added another seven. Frericks' seven solo tackles were a team-high, as were Baune's 1.5 tackles for loss.
In the secondary, Jack Burns logged seven total tackles and an interception.
Wabasso looks to carry its momentum into a road matchup against Renville County West (2-2) on Friday at 7 p.m. The Rabbits are set to have two more big tests in their ensuing three games, with matchups against Nicollet and Heron-Lake-Okabena/Fulda squads that each received votes in the latest media poll.
