HUTCHINSON -- Sam Meier and Marshall's balanced rushing attack helped the Tiger football squad upset No. 5 Hutchinson for a 27-13 win on Friday. The victory was the 300th for head coach Terry Bahlmann in his coaching career, including his time in Marshall and Iowa.
Marshall jumped out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter, though Hutchinson tightened up the game with 13 unanswered points in the second. Still, Marshall scored a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters while shutting out Hutchinson to hold onto the win.
Meier led Marshall's rushing attack with 18 carries for 83 yards, followed by Tyler Kraft's seven carries for 46 yards. Cannon Craigmile punched in a pair of rushing touchdowns, taking eight carries for 25 yards.
Marshall's ballhawks were out in full force on the night. Ethan Weedman came away with a 29-yard pick 6, and Rocco Rignell and Jayden Meister each also picked off passes.
Craigmile completed three of his five pass attempts for 107 yards and a touchdown to Meier. Weedman caught two passes for 28 yards and Meier caught one for 29.
Marshall improves to 3-1 on the year after bouncing back from its previous loss to No. 6 Willmar. The Tigers' gauntlet continues with their third of four consecutive games against ranked opponents slated for Friday, when Marshall hosts No. 10 Delano (4-0) at 7 p.m.
