MARSHALL -- Marshall High School cross country continued its recent run of success Tuesday, with the Tigers putting together strong performances at their home meet at Marshall Golf Club.
The Marshall boys varsity team came away with the team championship by just one point, while the girls squad also put together an impressive showing, finishing second and trailing the team champion by just six points.
The close team scores highlighted just how competitive the meet was, with every individual finish playing an important role in determining the final standings.
On the boys side, Charles Mueller-Thompson led the way for the Tigers in the 5,000-meter race, crossing the finish line in third place with a time of 17:18.1.
Noland Munson also cracked the top 10 for Marshall, finishing ninth in 18:28.1.
Christian DeGroot followed with an 11th-place finish after completing the course in 18:38.6. He was followed by teammate Corbin Leibfried, who finished 14th with a time of 19:19.9.
The Tigers then had another pair of runners finish back-to-back. Tony Wambeke placed 17th in 19:58.7, while Xavier Rabaey crossed just behind him in 18th with a time of 20:00.5.
Gunnar Ruud rounded out Marshall’s varsity boys runners, finishing 21st in 20:13.2.
The Tigers’ depth throughout the field proved to be especially important in the team competition. With multiple runners finishing near the front of the pack, Marshall was able to edge the rest of the field by one point and claim the boys team title on its home course.
Marshall also had a strong showing in the girls 5,000-meter race, highlighted by an individual championship from Katelyn Leibfried.
Leibfried paced the Tigers with a winning time of 19:16.3, finishing first overall and giving Marshall a strong start at the front of the field.
Claire Kruse added another top-three finish for the Tigers, taking third in 19:44.4.
Marshall then had three more runners finish inside the top 15. Jenna Sanders placed 11th in 21:51.8, followed closely by Landrew Graven in 12th at 21:55.5. Kaitlyn Soupir rounded out the group in 13th with a time of 21:57.6.
Brooklyn Purrington completed the Tigers’ group of runners with a 23rd-place finish, crossing the finish line in 24:17.2.
While the girls narrowly missed out on the team championship, their six-point margin behind the winning team showed how competitive the race was.
With both varsity squads finishing near the top of the team standings and several individual runners recording strong finishes, Marshall continued to show the depth and consistency that have become trademarks of the program.
Competing on its home course gave the Tigers another opportunity to put their preparation to the test, and both teams will look to carry Tuesday’s performances into the remainder of the season.
