Marshall defeats Waseca in Legion tourney

MANKATO -- Second-seeded Marshall opened the DI Senior Legion Sub-State 2 Baseball Tournament with a strong 7-1 win over seventh-seeded Waseca on Wednesday.
The Mudcats started slow in the game, with the game being tied at 1 in the third inning. But Marshall found its bats in the back half of the game for a comfortable margin of victory.
Tyler Kraft got the complete-game win for the Mudcats, striking out six and allowing one unearned run on two hits. At the plate for Marshall, Chase Alcorn was 1 for 4 with two RBIs, while Andrew Stelter had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored. Trae Bailey had a hit, an RBI and a run scored.
Marshall scored in the first inning, with Alcorn putting an error into play that brought home Stelter. Waseca tied it in the third inning, getting a run on a hit and an error, but Marshall quickly got the lead back in the bottom of the inning, with Ethan Boeck tripling then coming home on a Stelter groundout. Alcorn earned an RBI double later in the inning to make it a 3-1 game.
Marshall kept up the offense in the fifth, plating three runs. Stelter tagged up on a flyout by Alcorn for the first run of the inning, followed by Eli Weedman scoring on an error put into play by Noah Frazee. Another error put into play by Keynan Coequyt scored Frazee for a 6-1 advantage. Bailey's double in the sixth inning scored one more run as the Mudcats advanced to the second round of the tournament.
Marshall will now play the winner of third-seeded Mankato American and sixth-seeded Northfield Thursday at 2 p.m.
