ST. MICHAEL — Jackson Staab returned to the podium on the first day of the Class A Track and Field Championships at St. Michael-Albertville High School on Thursday. A year after placing third in the state shot put championships, the Lakeview senior hit a distance of 61-4.75 to top the leaderboard this time around.
Staab’s individual state championship on Thursday still does not mark the end of his prep athletic career. He’ll aim to add yet another medal to his collection when he competes in the discus on Friday after placing 10th in the event last year.
Lakeview’s Adeline Louwagie also placed 12th in the girls discus championships at 118-09, marking the sophomore’s first time on the state podium.
Broden Stensrud also won a state title for Lakeview in the wheelchair shot put, throwing a distance of 18-09 to beat out Long Prairie-Grey Eagle’s Robert Kendall’s 16-04.
Wabasso’s Andrew Morin and Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central’s Adrian Yang also competed in final events on Thursday. Morin placed 12th in the 3200 meters at 10:05.52, while Yang did not place in the pole vault.
Canby/Minneota and Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd each had girls relay teams qualify for Friday’s finals. The Lancers’ Jordyn Jostock, Taylor Ourada, Brynn Kockelman and Karlie Wollum put together qualifying times in both the 4×100 and 4×200-meter relays, placing sixth in the former preliminary at 49.63 and fifth in the latter at 1:44.26. Jostock, Ourada and Kockelman were also joined by VanEngen in the 4×400-meter preliminaries, but their time of 4:07.08 to take 12th place left them 0.96 back of the final qualifying slot.
For the LQPV/DB Eagles, Makiah Pust, Chloe Gloege, Sadie Rosendahl and Brynn Gloege placed eighth in the 4×400, running a time of 4:05.91 to advance to Friday’s final. Brynn Gloege also placed 12th individually in Thursday’s individual 800 meter final at 2:20.02, leaving her 1.79 seconds shy of the final qualifying slot.
Friday’s Class A finals will begin at St. Michael-Albertville High School at 3:30 p.m.
