Marshall VFW cruises past Brookings in doubleheader sweep
BROOKINGS, S.D. — The Marshall VFW Orange 15U team was firing on all cylinders in its doubleheader against the 16U Brookings Bullets on Monday. Marshall shutout Brookings 19-0 in the first game behind a one-hitter performance from Max Weedman, and did the same for a 9-1 win in the second game with a big offensive performance from Magnus Schlenner.
With the two wins, VFW moves to 12-2 on the season and will return home to host Fargo Post 400 for a Thursday doubleheader at Legion Field, beginning at 1 p.m.
GAME 1
MARSHALL 19, BROOKINGS 0 (5 inn.)
Nothing could stop Marshall’s fast start in the first game after scoring nine runs in the first inning. Orange continued to chip away from there, adding another seven in the second and three more in the third.
Weedman secured the shutout on the mound in his complete game, striking out six batters while allowing just one hit and no walks.
16 of Marshall’s runs were accounted for by RBIs, as Orange finished with eight hits.
Schlenner had a team-high three RBIs, while Kaden Boeck went a perfect 2 for 2 at the plate with a pair of runs and two RBIs.
Seven different players for Marshall scored at least two runs as well, led by Cale Erickson’s three.
Nolan Deutz got the momentum started for Marshall in the first inning with a two-run RBI single with a line drive to center field to score both Mason Moua and Schlenner. Schlenner was hit by a pitch to reach base, while Moua was courtesy running for Bennett Kimman after his base hit, and reached on an error.
Weedman scored shortly after Marshall got the bases loaded and Boeck was hit by a pitch, and Deutz followed right behind when Emmett Frazee was walked.
Mauer Leysen brought in two more runners on a hard ground ball up to center field directly after.
Marshall continued through its batting lineup, as Frazee, Leysen and Matthew Ryks accounted for the last three runs of the opening inning.
Orange didn’t let up off the gas from there, and proceeded to carry on until mercy-rule could be applied.

Frazee put together an impressive pitching performance in Marshall’s second game of the doubleheader. He finished with 10 strikeouts, allowing just one walk and three hits through his six innings.
Despite closing out the game for just the final inning, Jaden Lyons also showed strength after retiring two batters without a hit or a walk as well.
Schlenner had a stellar game at the plate to lead Marshall offensively in the win. He went 2 for 4 with a pair of runs, including a double and a triple. Frazee also had a team-high three runs.
Following a scoreless first inning, Marshall ultimately took control of the game with a six-run second inning. Brookings’ lone run of the game came in the top of the third, and were shutout the rest of the way.
Frazee scored the first Marshall run in the second inning to get the rally started, first being walked and then scored with a Brownlee bunt.
VanOverbeke followed shortly after when Kerkaert was walked on bases loaded, just as both Brownlee and Lyons scored on an error by the Brookings’ catcher.
Schlenner then connected for an RBI double to score Kerkaert, as Schlenner ran home for the final run of the inning shortly after on a Brookings’ defensive error.
Orange finished with four hits and three errors to Brookings’ three hits and seven errors.
Marshall VFW continues its hot start to the season, winning eight of its last nine games following the doubleheader wins.
