Marshall VFW comes up short to Jackson

JACKSON — The Marshall VFW Orange 15U baseball team came up just short despite a late fight for a 3-2 loss against Jackson Thursday night on the road.

Jackson had a 3-1 edge heading into the final frame after scoring twice in the third and once more in the sixth.

Marshall did what it could while looking to tie the game up in its final at-bat in the top of the seventh.

Kellen Drake brought Marshall within a run after scoring with two outs on a Max Weedman RBI single. Drake initially reached base with a leadoff double on a line drive to right field.

Yet, Jackson was able to hang on for the winner and secured the last out with an infield fly-ball catch.

Marshall was the first to get on the board with a run in the first inning, again Weedman running in Matthew Ryks with an RBI single.

Weedman led Marshall offensively with a pair of RBIs and went 3 for 4 at the plate. Drake, Bennett Kimman and Graem Bly also had one double each.

Mauer Leysen got the start on the mound and tossed five strikeouts, allowing just one hit, through his three innings. G Bly also had an impressive performance in relief, striking out six batters and allowing one hit in his three frames.

Marshall (10-2) will look to get back in the win column when it returns home to host Brookings on Monday for a doubleheader. The first game is slated to start at 5 p.m. with the second to follow.
