Winn ties for third at St. Cloud Invite

ST. CLOUD BOYS INVITE

ST. CLOUD — Marshall freshman Elijah Winn tied for third in the field of 135 at the St. Cloud Boys Golf Invitational on Thursday, helping Marshall to a ninth-place finish out of 22 teams.

Winn finished his round at 1-over 73, trailing only Buffalo’s Nicholas Kubu’s 71 and Benilde-St. Margaret’s 72. Winn birdied two of his first three holes, and logged a par on eight back-9 holes.

The Tigers compiled a team score of320, beating out Albany and Willmar’s 322 and finishing just behind Mounds View’s 319.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s topped the team field at 305, followed by Bemidji at 308 and Sartell at 309. Each of the podium schools is in Class 3A.

Keegan Fossum was Marshall’s No. 2 golfer on the day, placing 31st with an 8-over 80. He was particularly strong in the final stretch of his round, going even-par for the final five holes with a birdie.

Deacon Wing and Carter Manthei rounded out the Tiger scorers in 56th and 64th, respectively. Wing shot an 83 with a birdie and eight pars, and Manthei shot an 84 with seven front-9 pars and a birdie on the back 9.

Also competing for Marshall, Ethan Wendorff’s 86 and Jaylen Koster’s 92 slotted them 77th and 111th, respectively, and Milo Swenson shot an 89 to place 96th.

The Marshall boys now prepare for the Big South Conference Championship, Tuesday at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club at 10 a.m.

ST. CLOUD GIRLS INVITE

ST. CLOUD — Dayton Webskowski placed ninth out of 88 golfers at the St. Cloud Girls Golf Invitational on Thursday morning, helping Marshall to place 10th in the 15-team event.

Webskowski shot a 12-over 84 for the round, logging birdies on holes 9 and 15 with six pars.

As a team, Marshall shot a 385, one stroke back of Class 3A Rocori’s 384. Class 3A Rogers and Monticello took the top two spots at 338 and 334, and Class 2A Legacy Christian Academy finished with the bronze at 354.

Maddi Panka also put together a strong round for Marshall, riding a stretch of four consecutive pars on the back 9 to a 19-over 91 to place 22nd, and Kathryn Gordon also finished in the top half of the field with a 101.

Isabella Gossen was the Tigers’ No. 4 scorer, placing 68th with a 109. Anna Thor and Emry Weller also competed in the event, tying for 72nd place with a 111.

Rogers had the meet’s top two individuals, with Aurie McCoy shooting a 73 and Ella Souli shooting a 75 to tie Monticello’s Alayna Opatz for second.

The Marshall girls return to action with the Big South Conference Championship at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club on Monday at 10 am.
