MADISON — Madison Hennen’s no-hitter decided the game for the Minneota/Canby softball team on Thursday. Taking on Lac qui Parle Valley in Camden Conference play, hits were hard to come by for both teams, but Hennen’s dominance from the circle allowed the Vikings to pull out a 2-0 win.

Hennen struck out 6 of the 24 batters she faced over the course of the game, limiting the Eagles to one walk with no hits.

Emily Walker scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the first. She hit a leadoff single, stole second and scored on a McKenzie Bednarek sacrifice fly.

Jayla Jerzak scored the game’s lone other run in the fourth when she singled and scored on a Courtney Antony double.

Antony was the lone batter in the game to reach base multiple times, finishing with a triple, a double and a walk. As a team, Minneota/Canby finished with four hits and one walk.

LQPV threatened to take the lead in the fifth when each of their first two batters of the inning reached on errors. Yet, Hennen got back-to-back strikeouts and the Vikings caught one of the baserunners in the basepaths to get out of the jam unscathed.

Closing the regular season with an 18-6 record, the Vikings enter the Section 3AA tournament as the No. 5 seed in the South bracket. Minneota/Canby will take on No. 4 Redwood Valley in the first round on Tuesday at Jackson County Central at 4 p.m. With a win, Minneota/Canby would take on top-seeded Jackson County Central (ranked No. 2 in all of Class AA) in the second round at 5:30 p.m.

WALNUT GROVE — Jaida Fricke’s pitching and hitting led the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton softball team to a bounce-back win over Red Rock Central, Thursday in Red Rock Conference play. Fricke shut down the Falcons on the mound and drove in a pair of runs in a 5-0 win for the Knights.

Fricke threw a complete-game shutout for RTR, striking out 12 batters without walking any. She held the Falcons to four hits on the day.

RTR first took the lead in the top of the third. Taylin Thooft reached base with a single, advanced on a Paisley Thooft sacrifice bunt and scored on a Fricke double. Laken Baartman then doubled home Fricke before scoring on a Grace DeVries single.

Fricke, Baartman and DeVries each had a pair of hits for the Knights, including a pair of doubles for Fricke and DeVries. Fricke also drew the game’s only walk.

Carlie Ross was charged with the loss for RRC/WWG, surrendering five earned runs on 10 hits and a walk. She also singled for one of the Falcons’ four hits, along with a single from Natasha Wahl and doubles from Leah Carter and DeAnn Roiger.

Payton Johanson led off the fourth with a single before scoring on a Taylin Thooft ground out. RTR added one last insurance run in the inning when Paisley Thooft singled and scored on a Fricke double.

RTR (10-9) wraps up its regular season with a matchup against Avon (S.D.) at Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Saturday at 2 p.m. From there, the Knights enter the Section 3A tournament as the No. 6 seed in the South bracket and will take on No. 3 Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian at Dirks Park in Olivia on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. With a win, the Knights would take on either No. 2 BOLD or No. 7 TMB at 6 p.m.

JCC 7, Wabasso 6

WABASSO — A valiant effort from the No. 10 Wabasso softball team wasn’t enough to top Class 2A No. 2 Jackson County Central on Thursday. The Rabbits led 6-4 heading into the final frame, but JCC scored three runs in the top of the seventh to hand Wabasso a 7-6 loss.

JCC got back-to-back singles to start its rally, and the game turned on its head when Bailey Finck hit a three-run go-ahead home run to center field.

Wabasso retired three of the next four batters to get out of the inning without further damage, but JCC retired the side in order in the bottom of the frame, striking out the final two batters to secure a Huskie victory.

Macy Rohlik and Audrey Johnson each logged a pair of hits in the game, while Delaina Eis added another hit with a pair of walks. Aylah Jenniges also recorded a double and a walk.

In the circle, Jenniges gave up six earned runs on 10 hits and three walks over seven innings. She struck out five batters in the game.

JCC took a 4-3 lead with a run in the top of the sixth, but Wabasso claimed its first lead of the day with three runs in the bottom of the frame. With two outs, Cassie Bliss and Peyton Jenniges drew consecutive walks, and Macy Rohlik capitalized with a two-run go-ahead single. Audrey Johnson added another RBI single immediately after to give the Rabbits a two-run cushion.

JCC scored a run in the top of the first and two more in the third to take an early 3-0 lead. Yet, Wabasso got on the board when Kayleigha Johnson led off the fourth with a single and scored on a passed ball with two outs.

An inning later, Wabasso tied up the game at three runs apiece. Audrey Johnson singled with two outs before scoring when JCC committed an error on an Eis single, and Aylah Jenniges doubled in Alexa Remiger — in as a pinch runner for Eis — to tie the game.

Wabasso closes its regular season at 16-5, and now prepares to defend its Section 3A championship as the top seed in the South bracket. The Rabbits host No. 8 Murray County Central at 3 p.m., and would then play either No. 4 Adrian/Ellsworth or No. 5 Lakeview in the second round at 6 p.m. if they win the first game.

YME 11, Ortonville 0 (5 inn.)

GRANITE FALLS — A 10-run burst in the second inning gave the Yellow Medicine East softball team all the offense it needed in its Camden Conference matchup against Ortonville on Thursday. The Sting rode that early momentum to an 11-0 mercy-rule win in five innings.

Bayli Sneller kept the Trojans off the basepaths in her complete-game pitching outing. She struck out 10 batters while holding Ortonville to one hit with no walks.

The Sting led 1-0 heading into the second, but started to add to its lead when Ella Cherveny singled and scored when Everra Leenerts reached on an error. Kourtney Peterson followed up with an RBI single and, after a Brianna Nelson single put runners on the corners, Sneller drove in a run on a ground out to bring the score to 4-0.

With two outs, Alana Almich hit an RBI double and Emma Keller reached on an error to push across another run. Back-to-back RBI singles by Chasity Schmitz and Cherveny brought the score to 8-0, and after Charlotte Paslawski drew a walk, Leenerts hit a two-run single and scored by going home as Peterson tried to steal second to cap off the 10-run frame.

Keller led YME at the plate with a triple and a double, while Leenerts drove in a game-high three runs. Almich also logged a double and a single while Peterson singled twice.

YME improves to 16-5 to close out the regular season and enters the Section 3A tournament as the top seed in the South bracket. The Sting host No. 8 Ortonville in their postseason opener at 3 p.m. With a win, they would take on either No. 4 MACCRAY or No. 5 Renville County West at 6 p.m.

Luverne 10, Marshall 3

LUVERNE — The Luverne Cardinals’ second-inning surge was too much for the Marshall softball team to overcome in its regular-season finale Thursday, falling 10-3 in Big South Conference play.

Luverne erupted for six second-inning runs and tacked on another four in the third. Marshall began to respond with three of its own in the fourth, but couldn’t muster any more offense to get back into the game from there.

Bailynn Parsons and Kinsley Bitker singled to start the fourth for Marshall, and Jaylah Morgan followed up with a one-out RBI single to get the Tigers on the board. Brynlee Dieken added another RBI single and Hayley Kirchner — in for Morgan as a courtesy runner — scored on a passed ball to cut the gap to 10-3, but Luverne didn’t let a Marshall runner get past second base for the remainder of the game.

Errors doomed the Tigers early. Sara Dallmann gave up 10 runs over her 2 2/3-inning start, but only three were earned. She struck out a pair of batters while giving up five hits and three walks.

Alissa Moen threw 3 1/3 shutout innings of relief for Marshall, holding the Cardinals to one hit and one walk with four strikeouts. Yet, she didn’t receive the run support needed to get the Tigers a win.

Dieken led Marshall at the plate with a pair of hits and an RBI, and Natalya Reed finished with a double and two walks.

Marshall heads into the Section 2AAA Tournament with a 5-15 record. Marshall’s 0-5 section record leaves them as one of two teams without a win over a section opponent, along with Albert Lea (1-14, 0-1 2AAA). The first round of the section tournament will be played at Caswell Park in North Mankato on Thursday at 5 p.m.
