Sorenson tosses immaculate inning in Hadley win

HADLEY — Tucker Sorenson threw an immaculate inning for the Hadley Buttermakers in their Gopher League matchup against Fox Lake on Sunday, helping his team run away with a 15-1 win in seven innings.

Sorenson’s nine-pitch, three-strikeout inning came in the second with the game still tied at 0-0. He finished the day with 14 strikeouts and no walks over five innings, limiting the Foxes to one earned run on a pair of hits.

Hadley capitalized from there with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead. Fox Lake got on the board with a run in the fourth, but the Buttermakers answered with seven runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to put the game away.

Dylan Kluis, Danny Blankenship and Alex Petersen each drove in four runs for the Buttermakers while Joe Larson drove in another two. Blankenship and Peterson each also logged a single, a double and a walk while Kluis logged three singles and a stolen base.

Bryce Ahrendt and Owen Gillette closed out the game with a scoreless, hitless inning of relief each.

Hadley improves to 2-0 on the season and next goes on the road to take on Luverne, Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Milroy Irish 14, Pipestone 5

PIPESTONE — The Milroy Irish got back above .500 on Sunday, picking up a 14-5 win over the Pipestone A’s in Gopher League play.

Derek Smith led the Irish’s offensive barrage with two doubles, two singles and a walk. Trevor Smith and Tyler Peterson each also finished with a double and two singles, as well as two doubles and three RBIs for Peterson, while Tyler Maeyaert contributed three singles and a walk.

Maeyaert picked up the win on the mound after throwing two scoreless innings of relief, striking out six batters while surrendering one hit. Peterson threw another pair of 3-up, 3-down frames while Derek Smith closed out the game with two strikeouts in a scoreless, hitless ninth.

Trevor Smith threw the first four innings for the Irish, allowing a pair of earned runs and three unearned runs on five hits and a pair of walks. The Irish led 6-5 when he exited the game.

Milroy scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings, and added one in each of the ensuing four innings. The gap continued to expand with three seventh-run innings, one more in the eighth and two more in the ninth.

The Irish improve to 2-1 with the win and next take on the Granite Falls Kilowatts at Richter Field in Granite Falls, Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Granite Falls 11, Dawson 1

GRANITE FALLS — Bennett Knapper hit an eighth-inning grand slam to put the finishing touches on the Granite Falls Kilowatts’ non-league win over the Dawson Drakes on Sunday. The Kilowatts’ offense exploded early and never looked back as they cruised to an 11-1 win in eight innings.

Granite Falls led 7-1 heading into the eighth, needing four runs to put the mercy rule into effect. The Drakes retired each of the first two Kilowatts of the inning, but Andrew Flaten walked, Nikson Knapper singled and Jake Odegard reached on an error to load the bases. Bennett Knapper seized the opportunity to end the game, blasting a home run to right field to seal the Kilowatts’ victory.

Bennett Knapper threw the first four innings for Granite Falls, striking out 10 of the 15 batters he faced. He gave up one walk, no hits and one unearned run.

In relief, Nikson Knapper and Bryce Sneller each tossed a pair of scoreless innings to close out the combined no-hitter. Knapper struck out four batters while walking two, and Sneller struck out five batters while walking one.

Nikson and Bennett Knapper each logged a pair of hits in the game, and Sneller and Drew Almich each doubled once. As a team, Granite Falls drew nine walks and reached base on four errors.

Dawson took an early lead when Derek Gritmacher reached on a dropped third strike in the second, advancing to second on a Grayson Olson walk and scoring when Braxton Thompson reached on an error.

The lead didn’t last long, however. Gage Wilke singled before scoring on a Nikson Knapper single in the bottom of the frame to tie the game up.

An inning later, Sneller hit a leadoff double and Colton Vien reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Hunter Wilke then walked to load the bases, Gage Wilke was hit by a pitch and Cody Dahler walked to each drive in a run, and a pair of passed balls allowed another pair of runs to score for a 5-1 lead.

Braden Thompson was charged with the loss, giving up four unearned runs and one earned run on five walks and four hits over 2 2/3 innings. Tygen Long gave up another earned run over 2 1/3 frames, Braxton Thompson gave up one run over two innings of relief, and Blake Thompson gave up four unearned runs on a pair of hits while getting two outs.

Granite Falls improves to 1-0 and next hosts the Milroy Irish (2-1) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Dawson falls to 0-1 and goes on the road to take on the Hancock Orphans, Sunday at 4 p.m.
