Marshall boys, girls finish 5th at BSC meet
NEW ULM — The Marshall boys and girls track and field teams each finished fifth in the Big South Conference Championship meet, Tuesday in New Ulm.
The Tiger boys finished with 79.5 points while the girls tallied 79 in the eight-team meet.
Belle Plaine won the boys meet with 168 points, followed by Fairmont at 101, Waseca at 93 and St. Peter at 85.5. On the girls side, St. Peter took first at 182, Fairmont and Tri-City United rounded out the podium at 133 and 126, and Belle Plaine placed fourth at 98.5.
Sam Deutz, Aidan Schuerman and Colton Lindquist each finished the day with an individual conference title and a runner-up finish. Deutz won the 1600 meters at 4:31 and was the runner-up in the 3200, Schuerman’s 40.27 in the 300 hurdles was good for a win while he took second in the 110 hurdles, and Lindquist was the triple jump champion at 41-4.75 and the long jump runner-up.
Schuerman and Deutz also helped the Tiger 4×400-meter relay team, along with Hawkin Hartman and Mykel Paulsen, to a third-place finish at 3:41.23.
Katelyn Leibfried was the Marshall girls’ lone individual champion, winning the 3200 meters at 11:34. She also placed fourth in the 1600 and aided a 4×400-meter relay team with Taleigha Bigler, Jenna Sanders and Jasmine Murphy to a third-place finish at 4:22.37.
Bigler had a pair of podium finishes, finishing as the 800-meter runner-up and placing third in the 400 meters.
The Tiger girls had a pair of field event runner-up finishes with Brooklyn Purrington’s 5-02 in the high jump and Autumn Deutz’s 11-00 in the pole vault.
Marshall next competes in the Section 2AA championship meet on May 27 and 29 at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
