Cards’ clutch hitting staves off Kilo comeback

GRANITE FALLS — Seth Boerboom’s ninth-inning single helped the Cottonwood Cardinals stave off Granite Falls’ comeback bid in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday night. The Cardinals led by as many as five runs before the Kilowatts tied up the game, but they pulled out in the end for a 7-6 win.

With the score knotted up at six runs apiece, Cody St. Aubin was hit by a pitch and Noah Aubin reached base on an error to put the winning run in scoring position in the ninth. Bryce Sneller took over on the mound for the Kilowatts and got a strikeout, but Boerboom followed up with an RBI single to put the Cardinals on top.

Jensen also tried to advance home on the play, but was tagged out and Sneller got a strikeout to end the frame without further damage.

Cole Richter was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the frame to put the tying run on with one out for the Kilowatts, but Ayden St. Pierre got a fly out and a line out to earn the win.

St. Pierre threw 3 1/3 innings of relief to close out the game for Cottonwood, surrendering a pair of earned runs on two hits and two walks. Wyatt Schuster threw three scoreless innings while giving up two hits and a walk in his start for the Cardinals, while Austin Timm gave up one earned run over one frame and Taiven Isaackson gave up a pair of runs over 1 2/3 innings.

Boerboom hit a two-run single in the first to give Cottonwood an early lead after Jensen doubled and Jacob Rausch reached on an error.

Two innings later, Jensen and Rausch were hit by pitches and Jordan Fischer walked, setting the stage for Jensen to score on a wild pitch and Rausch and Fischer to score on an Isaackson single for a 5-0 Cottonwood lead.

Drew Almich was charged with the loss for Granite Falls, giving up one unearned run on a walk with no hits over two innings of relief. He also struck out three batters.

Hunter Wilke threw the first three innings for Wabasso, surrendering three earned runs on four hits and a walk.

Wednesday’s game marked the second consecutive one-run game for the Cardinals after they fell 7-6 to Chokio on Sunday.

Boerboom led the Cardinals at the plate with three hits and three RBIs, while Isaackson contributed a single, a walk and two RBIs. Nikson Knapper led the Kilowatts with four of the team’s eight hits, including a double.

Sneller got the Kilowatts on the board when he hit a leadoff double and scored on a Colton Vien sacrifice fly. An inning later, they added another run when Wilke walked and scored on a passed ball, trimming the deficit to 5-2.

Greg Schafer reached base on a dropped third strike, stole second and scored on a passed ball to get a run back for the Cardinals in the seventh, but the Kilowatts put together a two-out rally of their own in the bottom of the frame. Richter walked, stole second and scored on a Jake Odegard single, and Knapper singled in Odegard to cut the gap to two runs.

Vien and Gage Wilke reached base on a walk and a hit-by-pitch to lead off the seventh before being bunted into scoring position by Almich. With two outs, Odegard reached base on an error as both runners scored to tie up the game at six runs apiece.

Granite Falls next goes on the road to take on the Willmar Indians on Friday at 7:30 p.m., and Cottonwood returns to action with a road matchup against Ortonville on Friday at 8 p.m.
