Blackjacks pull away from YME with 7-run seventh
Dawson-Boyd 13, YME 6
GRANITE FALLS — Following a back-and-forth first six innings, the Dawson-Boyd baseball team’s bats put everything together in the seventh to earn a Camden Conference win over Yellow Medicine East. The Blackjacks led by just a run heading into the final frame, but they strung together seven runs to earn a 13-6 win.
Leading 6-5, the Blackjacks started the sixth with back-to-back walks to Eli Olson and Kyan Moseng, and Colten Bothun reached on an error to load the bases. Another walk to Kameron Sather pushed across one run and Nathan Hansen drove in another pair on a single.
The rally continued as Holland Schacherer singled in a run and Aedyn Dahl reached on an error to make the score 11-5 with still no outs in the frame. The Sting struck out each of the next two batters from there, but Olson hit a two-run double to cap off the frame with a 13-5 lead.
Schacherer and Moseng led the Blackjacks at the plate with three hits each. Schacherer drove in four runs on the day, and Moseng drove in another three while drawing a walk.
YME made a strong effort to rebuttal in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Kolten Blankenhagen walked and Cal Almich and Drew Monson singled consecutively to load the bases. Yet, a fielder’s choice at the plate put two away and Gunnar Fagen drove in one run with a single to left field, but the Sting got an out on the play to end the game.
Sather was credited with the win for the Blackjacks, tossing two innings of relief while giving up one earned run on three hits and a pair of walks with three strikeouts.
Hansen pitched the first 4 1/3 innings, surrendering a pair of earned runs on three hits and five walks with three strikeouts in a no decision. Bothun got another pair of outs while surrendering two earned runs on a hit and two walks.
Fagen tossed a strong first five innings for YME, giving up two earned and three unearned runs on 12 hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. Caysen Liens gave up another four earned and four unearned runs on four hits and four walks over 1 2/3 frames, and Gavin Torvik retired the one batter he faced to close out the game.
Lane Wohlmann had a big game for the Sting at the plate, driving in three runs on a single and two walks. Monson also reached base four times with a pair of singles and a pair of walks.
The Blackjacks scored a pair of runs on a Schacherer single in the first, but YME answered with a run in the bottom of the frame. Dawson-Boyd maintained a narrow lead from there, teetering between two and three runs until Hayden Kuehn was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Wohlman drew a walk to cut the gap to 6-5.
Wohlman’s walk came with just one out, but Sather struck out the final two batters of the frame to leave three Sting runners stranded.
Dawson-Boyd improves to 8-4 and next hosts undefeated Murray County Central on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
YME falls to 6-6 and looks to climb back above .500 when it hosts Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
