ST. CLOUD — The Marshall baseball team erupted for five fifth-inning runs in its non-conference matchup against St. Cloud Crush on Thursday, riding that momentum to a 6-2 victory in its regular-season finale.
The Tigers trailed 1-0 heading into the fifth, but a walk to Andrew Lee and a Levi Maeyaert single put the go-ahead run on base with one out. Trae Bailey hit an RBI double to tie the game, and Tyler Kraft grounded into a fielder’s choice but a late throw home allowed the go-ahead run to score.
Marshall continued to add extra insurance on an RBI single from Noah Pieper and a two-run single by Ethan Boeck.
Lee earned the pitching win for Marshall, surrendering one earned run on four hits and three walks over 4 2/3 innings. He also struck out six batters in the game. In relief, Frazee earned the save by throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out four batters while giving up a hit and a walk.
St. Cloud scored the game’s first run on an RBI double in the first, but Marshall held the Crush bats at bay for the remainder of the game, save for a run on a two-out error in the fifth.
Maeyaert and Boeck each reached base twice for the Tigers in the game, and Bailey logged a double, a walk and an RBI.
Andrew Stelter led off the sixth with a walk and scored on an error with two outs to bring the score to 6-2.
Marshall improves to 18-5 with the win and now awaits seeding for the Section 2AAA tournament. The first round of the postseason will be played at the home site of the high seed on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and the remainder of the tournament will be split between Johnson Park and Mueller Park in New Ulm.
