MARSHALL — After falling to Willmar in the first game of Friday’s home doubleheader, the Marshall baseball team bounced back in the night cap, downing Mankato West 9-0.

The Tigers and Scarlets have had some recent history, with the Scarlets knocking Marshall out of the winner’s bracket in last year’s section tournament and ending the Tigers’ season in the elimination bracket in both the 2023 and 2024 Section 2AAA tournaments.

“We dropped the last couple games, so it feels good to get this one under our belt,” Marshall senior Levi Maeyaert said. “We know Mankato’s a good team. We caught them on an off night for them, but we took care of business and did our job.”

Eli Alcorn earned the win on the mound for Marshall, holding Mankato West scoreless for six innings. He struck out seven batters and limited the Scarlets to three hits before being relieved by Noah Frazee, who struck out three batters while giving up a walk in a scoreless seventh.

Marshall first took the lead in the second when Trae Bailey singled and scored on a wild pitch.

An inning later, Andrew Lee reached on an error and Andrew Stelter was hit by a pitch to put two runners on when Bailey stepped up to the plate with two outs. He reached on an error to drive in one run, and Maeyaert followed up with a two-run single to bring the score to 4-0.

“I was up in the count and knew I was getting the fastball. Just staying within myself, take the ball the other way, and my teammates did a really good job of getting on base for me,” Maeyaert said.

Maeyaert led Marshall with a pair of hits, a walk and four RBIs at the plate while Chase Alcorn also contributed a double and a single.

Chase Alcorn led off the fourth with a double before scoring on a wild pitch to get Marshall a run in the fourth, and the Tigers continued to pull away with four more in the fifth.

Eli Weedman was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and a JR Vierstraete single and a Bailey walk loaded the bases with no outs. Maeyaert capitalized with a two-run single and Noah Pieper drove in another run on a fielder’s choice. Ethan Weedman capped off the scoring by driving in a run on a ground out.

Marshall improves to 8-2 with the win and next goes on the road to take on Worthington tonight at 5:30 p.m.
