TUCSON, Ariz. — The No. 6 seed Southwest Minnesota State wheelchair basketball team closed its season on Saturday morning suffering a 61-50 loss to No. 5 seed the University of Illinois in the third-place game of the National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament inside the McKale Center.
SMSU, which defeated Eastern Washington and Arizona in the first two games of the tournament before suffering a loss to Auburn in Friday’s semifinals, ends the season with a record of 13-11 overall.
SMSU was in control for much of the first half in Saturday’s game, including holding a 30-19 halftime advantage. The Fighting Illini however rallied with a strong third quarter and held a 46-43 lead after 30 minutes.
It’s the second straight season SMSU has closed among the top four in the tournament following last season’s third-place finish.
