RTR walks-off Blackjacks in final inning comeback

RUSSELL — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton baseball game went into the final inning facing a 7-2 deficit, but exploded for six runs in the bottom of the seventh to come back, tie and walk-off for an 8-7 thriller against Dawson-Boyd Friday night.

Garrett Elton scored the first run of the comeback rally off a Tyson Burns hit, who reached base on an error. Brayden Chandler then hit a two-run RBI double on a line drive to center field to run in Burns and Tyler Wichmann to cut into a 7-5 deficit.

Chandler scored the next run as the result of a Blackjacks’ error, and Gavin Schreurs hit an RBI single to run in Isaac Janish to tie up the score, 7-7.

With two outs, Schreurs’ got the third base off a wild pitch then scored the walk-off run following a Quinn Valdez hit to end the game in dramatic fashion.

Chandler threw nine strikeouts in his 4 2/3 innings pitched for the Knights, allowing six walks, three hits and four earned runs. Schreurs came in for the final two innings with five strikeouts, allowing two walks and one hit.

For the Blackjacks, Holland Schacherer led the way with a game-high five RBIs.

Dawson-Boyd initially took a 4-0 lead after scoring four runs in the top of the third inning, and added another three in the sixth.

Colten Bothun spent five innings on the mound, finishing with six strikeouts, two walks and five hits.

RTR (3-1) will next host Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Dawson-Boyd (2-1) will next travel to Ortonville with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.

SLAYTON — The Murray County Central baseball team shutout Minneota in a 9-0 win on Friday behind Krew Schneider’s seven-strikeout pitching performance.

The Rebels had their bats going, highlighted by doubles from Carson Lewis, Cayden Veldhuisen and Tristan Behrends.

Schneider pitched for six innings, allowing just two walks and two hits with his seven strikeouts. Teague Meyer stepped in for the final inning, also throwing a pair of strikeouts with no walks, allowing one hit.

Behrends led MCC going 2-for-3 at the plate, while Veldhuisen had a team-high of two RBIs.

Carson Javers led Minneota on the mound, throwing a trio of strikeouts while allowing seven walks, two earned runs and two hits in his five innings pitched. Logan Esping came in as relief for the final innings, allowing four hits, four earned runs and three walks.

Logan Pohlen had two hits of his three plate appearances to lead the Vikings offensively.

MCC (3-0) will look to keep its hot start to the season going when it hosts MLAC today at 4:30 p.m.

Minneota (0-3) will next have its home opener on Thursday against Renville County West with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.

GRANITE FALLS — The Yellow Medicine East baseball team came up short in a 3-1 loss to BOLD Friday night in a competitive matchup.

The Sting had three hits and one error on the day to the Warriors’ two hits and two errors.

Gunnar Fagen led YME going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

YME saw a strong pitching performance from Drew Monson and Gavin Torvik, who both tossed six strikeouts.

Monson was on the mound for the first two innings, allowing five walks, two earned runs and two hits. Torvik came in as relief, and finished his four innings with just two walks, allowing no runs or hits.

YME scored its lone run in the first inning.

The Sting (0-2) will next hit the road to MACCRAY on Monday with a 4:30 p.m. start time.

Wabasso 5, Canby 0

WABASSO — Following a scoreless first three innings, the Wabasso baseball team took care of business with five unanswered runs between the fourth and fifth innings to defeat Canby 5-0 Friday night.

Jack Burns led the Rabbits with three hits and a trio of stolen bases. Drew Kemp and Brooks Baune each had a pair of hits as well.

For Wabasso, Kemp tossed 10 strikeouts in his six innings on the mound, allowing just two hits with one walk while holding the Lancers off.

Jace Rangaard pitched for Canby for five innings, and threw three strikeouts while allowing one walk and one earned run.

Wabasso ultimately outhit Canby 11-2 and committed no errors to the Lancers’ two.

Canby (0-1) will stay on the road and head to Renville County West on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Wabasso will travel to Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s on Tuesday, also starting at 4:30 p.m.

COTTONWOOD — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton baseball team put together a complete team effort for an 8-3 win over Lakeview Friday night.

Jackson Kruse got the win on the mound and tossed five strikeouts through his three starting innings. He allowed two hits, four walks and three earned runs.

Brody Hauger got the save over the next four innings, finishing with one strikeout and two walks.

The Panthers exploded for a five-run fourth inning to take the lead in response to Lakeview scoring a trio of runs in the bottom of the third to build a 3-1 edge.

Taylor Squires and Brayden Marron accounted for two runs each, while Aiden Sanow and Hauger each had a double on the day.

For Lakeview, Braylon Breyfogle led the pitching front through 5 1/2 innings. He threw a game-high six strikeouts, while allowing five walks, three hits and two earned runs.

Easton Schmidt also had a double for the Lakers’ biggest hit of the day.

TMB (3-1) will next travel to Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (2-1) today at 4:30 p.m.

Lakeview (0-2) will stay at home to host MACCRAY on Thursday, also at 4:30 p.m.
