MCC 16, RRC/WWG 1

LAMBERTON — Teague Meyer struck out 11 batters and scored a pair of runs on Monday night, leading the Murray County Central baseball team to a 16-1 win over Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove in five innings in Red Rock Conference play.

Meyer pitched all five innings for MCC, limiting the Falcons to one earned run on one hit. He was efficient with his pitches as well, throwing just 61 over the course of the game.

MCC came out the gates swinging. Meyer hit a lead off double, and Cayden Veldhuisen reached on an error to put runners on the corners. With one out, Krew Schneider hit a two-run double to put MCC on the board, Gabe Tentinger was hit by a pitch to put two runners on again, and a Carson Lewis single and a Danny Larson ground out made the score 4-1.

In the bottom of the frame, Jordan Therkilson was hit by a pitch, stole his way to third and scored on a Jackson Jenniges sacrifice fly.

MCC’s pitching and defense stood tall from there, however, retiring six straight Falcons and 13 of the next 14 to close out the game. Meyer struck out each of the final four batters.

Veldhuisen led the MCC offense with a triple, two RBIs, a walk and three runs. Schneider also drove in three runs on a pair of singles and Carson Lewis reached base with a double and a single, netting a pair of RBIs.

Jake Erickson took the loss for RRC/WWG, giving up seven earned runs on eight hits and four walks over four innings. In relief, Jonah Skarupa surrendered a pair of earned runs on three hits and a pair of walks over the final frame.

Therkilsen was the lone batter to record a hit for RRC/WWG, and no Falcons drew a walk on the day.

MCC scored a pair of runs in the second and fourth innings to bring the lead to 8-1. The Rebels closed in on the mercy rule with an eight-run inning in the fifth.

A pair of errors allowed Tristan Behrends and Carter Hanson to reach base to start the frame and Meyer was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. A walk to Veldhuisen pushed across one run, prompting the RRC/WWG pitching change, and a Dugan Kluis sacrifice fly and a Schneider single brought the gap to 11 runs, putting the mercy rule in play.

Still, MCC wasn’t done scoring yet. Walks to Tentinger and Levi Kopperud pushed across a run, making the score 12-1 with two outs. Another walk to Finn Schneider made the score 13-1 and a passed ball and a two-run error during a Noah Frisk at-bat made the score 16-1.

MCC improves to 4-0 and hosts Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., and RRC/WWG falls to 2-2 and also next takes on MLAC on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. MCC’s Tuesday night game was still in progress at the time of print.
