NEW ULM — New Ulm and Marshall were both able to put up numbers in a Big South Conference baseball game on Tuesday. Both teams surpassed double-digit hits, and at least one run was scored in all but one half inning over the course of the game. But in the end, it was the Eagles that were able to come away with a 19-8 victory, thanks in large part to a 10-run fifth inning.

“I think we had really good approaches at the plate,” New Ulm head coach Jeff Ferrell said. “When you put [19] hits up, that’s a pretty good job by one through nine. I thought they had great plate appearances. Even some of the outs we’re hitting the ball right at them, and I was pleased with how we did. It’s a little different with no wind out today. Last few games we’ve had wind, and it gets up there and just knocks it down.

“But I thought we did a great job with our approach to put the ball in play. That first kid that pitched for them threw a good game. He’s not bad. Having an approach against someone like that, that was nice.”

New Ulm was able to hand Marshall its first loss of the season, as the Tigers opened their year with seven consecutive victories.

“These tough teams like them, it comes down to who wants it more,” said New Ulm’s Owen Castleman, who was 4 for 4 with three RBIs and four runs scored. “Today, I feel like we did. We outworked them on the field.”

Zach Hubbard earned the win for New Ulm, allowing one earned run on three hits in 2/3 of an inning. Candon Briggs made the start, striking out two while allowing seven runs, five earned, on 12 hits. Tanner Backer pitched the final inning, striking out two and allowing no baserunners.

“Just see ball, hit ball,” Castleman said. “See the ball in all the way, try to get on top of it and see what happens. Just hit the ball hard.”

Also for the Eagles, Ryan Rathmann was 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored, while Hunter Larson was 3 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Briggs was 2 for 4 with five RBIs and two runs scored, and Hubbard was 2 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Backer was 3 for 3 with an RBI, and Dirk Haynes was 2 for 2 with two runs scored.

Logan Phillippe took the loss for Marshall, striking out two and allowing 14 runs, nine earned, on 16 hits. At the plate, Eli Weedman was 3 for 4 with four RBIs, while Jesse Vierstraete was 2 for 4 with a run scored. Ethan Weedman was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Andrew Stelter was 2 for 3 with a run scored.

Marshall opened the game with a run as Ethan Weedman singled to bring home Stelter, but New Ulm tied it with a double from Castleman to score Hubbard. Eli Weedman drove home two runs in the top of the second, but New Ulm was able to respond as a groundout put into play by Kyle Albrecht plated Larson. Levi Maeyaert made it a 4-2 game in the third with a single to score Vierstraete, and an error put into play by Ethan Weedman scored Maeyaert for a 5-2 lead.

But the Eagles got a run home as Castleman singled and then scored on a Backer double. The game’s lone scoreless half inning took place in the top of the fourth, and New Ulm tied the game in the bottom of the inning, with Haynes and Hubbard both collecting RBIs. Eli Weedman got the lead back for Marshall with a single to plate Chase Alcorn, then Ethan Weedman added another run with a sacrifice fly to make it a 7-5 game. But the Eagles sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning, with Castleman earning two hits, Briggs bringing home three runs and Rathmann earning two RBIs to help take a 15-7 lead.

Noah Pieper was able to get one run back for the Tigers with a single to score Trae Bailey, but Castleman was hit by a pitch with bases loaded and Carson Boe hit a sacrifice fly to score Hubbard for a 17-8 game. Briggs was able to walk it off with a double to cut the game short at six innings.

New Ulm (6-2, 4-1) plays at Tri-City United on Thursday, while Marshall (7-1, 3-1) awaits a rematch with the Eagles at home on Monday.
