Miller, Doeden’s homers lead MCC past RRC/WWG

Prep softball roundup April 14, 2026

MCC 13, RRC/WWG 11

SLAYTON — Calleigh Doeden and Kat Miller each homered for the Murray County Central softball team Tuesday, helping the Rebels come out on top of a Red Rock Conference slugfest against Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove 13-11.

The score was tied up at five runs apiece through three innings, and RRC/WWG took the lead when Kendra Schroeder singled and scored on a Carlie Ross single. Yet, MCC turned the tide for good with six runs in the bottom of the frame.

The Rebels’ go-ahead rally started with three straight singles from Ava Deacon, Reese Wajer and Kate Blankenship, with Deacon scoring on the last of those hits to tie the game. Miller broke the game open in the next at-bat with a three-run homer to center field and Doeden hit a solo shot on the next pitch to make the score 10-6.

Hayden Miller then singled and scored on Deacon’s second single of the inning to cap off the frame with a five-run cushion for the Rebels.

Doeden finished the day with a homer, a double and two RBIs while Miller and Blankenship contributed four and three RBIs, respectively. Deacon also logged three singles and a double with a pair of RBIs.

VanDeWiele led the Falcons with a pair of hits and four RBIs while Roiger added another pair for three RBIs.

Trailing by six runs, RRC/WWG made one last push to force extras in the top of the seventh. An Alandra Hansen single and a Kennedy Carter walk put two runners on when Leah VanDeWiele hit a three-run homer to cut the deficit in half.

Natasha Wahl reached base on an error before scoring on a Leah Carter single with two outs, but a pop out ended the game with the tying run at the plate.

Wahl doubled and scored on a DeAnn Roiger single in the sixth, though MCC responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, courtesy of a Lily Kleven RBI single and a Deacon RBI double.

Blankenship earned the win in the circle for MCC, giving up five earned and six unearned runs on 13 hits and three walks in a complete-game effort. Ross took the loss for the Falcons, giving up 13 earned runs on 14 hits and three walks.

Roiger hit a two-run double for RRC in the top of the first, though Deacon singled and scored on a Blankenship fielder’s choice in the bottom of the frame, and Doeden doubled in Blankenship to tie the game.

Three straight singles from Kleven, Addy Dierks and Danyel Neilson loaded the bases in the second for MCC, and a walk to Wajer, Blankenship getting hit by a pitch and Miller reaching on a fielder’s choice pushed across three runs for the Rebels.

RRC retied the game in the top of the third. Roiger reached on an error, and a Ross single and a Hansen walk loaded the bases with no outs. A Kennedy Carter single, Sydney Foster reaching on an error and a VanDeWiele ground out each drove in a run before the frame ended, tying the game at 5-all.

MCC improves to 2-2 and looks to get above .500 when it hosts TMB on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

RRC/WWG falls to 1-4 and next hosts Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Sleepy Eye 3, Wabasso 1

SLEEPY EYE — A three-run third-inning resulted in the Wabasso softball team suffering its first loss of the season. Pitcher Aylah Jenniges did all she could to keep the Rabbits in the game against Sleepy Eye in Tomahawk Conference play, but a lack of run support prevented the Wabasso from overcoming the hiccup in a 3-1 loss.

Wabasso’s lone run came in the top of the first inning. Audrey Johnson was hit by a pitch in the game’s first at-bat and, with two outs, she scored on a wild pitch to give the Rabbits a 1-0 lead.

That run was the last the Rabbits scored on the day.

Sleepy Eye capitalized in the bottom of the third when Jace Schauman walked and scored on a Jaelynn Schauman single. Callie Evers then doubled in Schauman to put the Indians on top and Taylor Berkner reached base on an error to score Evers for a 3-1 lead.

Despite the lack of offensive production, Jenniges’ pitching kept Wabasso competitive. She limited Sleepy Eye to a pair of earned runs on five hits and four walks over six innings, striking out eight batters.

Kayleigha Johnson was the lone Rabbit with a hit in the game, singling with one out in the top of the seventh before a pair of strikeouts ended the game.

Wabasso falls to 4-1 and returns to action on Thursday with a home doubleheader against Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s at 4:30 p.m.
