Marshall boys, DB girls win at United Invite

BUFFALO LAKE — The Marshall boys and Dawson-Boyd girls golf teams each picked up first-place finishes at the Sleepy Eye United Invitational, Wednesday at Oakdale Golf Club. Marshall’s boys had three of the top four finishers in the 40-player event, while Alyssa Swedzinski was the top individual in the field of 37 girls.
On the boys side, Marshall finished with a team score of 296 to beat out runner-up Sleepy Eye United’s 311 and New Ulm’s 318. Dawson-Boyd also took fourth, tying Lac qui Parle Valley with 332 strokes, and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton placed sixth out of seven teams with 352 strokes.
On the girls side, Dawson-Boyd finished with a team score of 348 to beat LQPV’s 371. Marshall and RTR also placed third and fourth at 378 and 380, respectively.
Deacon Wing led a strong group of Tigers at the top of the boys field, tying United’s Nolan Kucera for first place with an even-par 72. He was 1-under through his first nine holes, and he had three birdies in his final four holes of the day to finish with a total of five.
Following directly behind Wing, Elijah Winn and Carter Manthei placed third and fourth. Winn shot a 73, including a stretch of four birdies and three pars on the front 9, while Manthei carded three birdies for a final score of 75.
Ethan Wendorff rounded out the Marshall scorers in seventh with a 76 and Keegan Fossum also shot a 77 to place 10th.
Swedzinski shot a 77 for Dawson-Boyd, beating out runner-up Molly Halvorson of Lac qui Parle Valley by three strokes. Swedzinski birdied her first hole of the day and finished with 11 pars.
Kylar Hjelmeland also tied for eighth place for the Blackjacks with an 89, while Laura Schreier and Claire Stratmoen tied for 11th with a 91 to round out the Dawson-Boyd scorers.
Dayton Webskowski was Marshall’s top girls finisher in the tournament. She shot a 14-over 86 to place fifth, and she was 1-under over the final four holes of her round.
Maddi Panka shot a 90 to place 10th or Marshall, and Emry Weller’s 100 and Anna Thor’s 102 slotted them into 19th and 201st place, respectively.
RTR’s Teigyn O’Leary carded an 83 to place third, highlighted by a hole-7 birdie. The Knights also got an 11th-place finish out of Leah Norgaard at 91, a 17th-place finish out of Izzy Thomas at 97 and eighth grader Jacey Schreurs placed 25th with a 109.
Dawson-Boyd’s Evan Mork and Carson Stratmoen tied Manthei for fourth place on the boys side. Mork recorded 13 pars and a birdie to finish at 3-over, and Stratmoen logged a pair of birdies and 11 pars.
Evan Menning’s 29th-place finish at 89 and Owen Schindler’s 93 to place 32nd rounded out the Dawson-Boyd boys.
RTR’s boys were led by Colten Thomsen in 19th with an 85.
Marshall returns to action on Thursday at 4 p.m., with the girls headed to St. Peter and the boys go to Montgomery for a pair of Big South Conference meets. The event was still in progress at the time of print.
RTR also has a Red Rock Conference meet ongoing at the time of print, with its girls at Sanborn and the boys at Murray County Central.
Dawson-Boyd heads to Eagle Creek Golf Club on Friday at noon.
