Jenniges, Eis combine for 15 Ks in pair of mercy-rule wins

WABASSO — Audrey Johnson rattled off three hits with three RBIs to help the Wabasso softball team defeat Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 11-1 in five innings Thursday night in the first game of a doubleheader. Aylah Jenniges also pitched a complete game, throwing an impressive nine strikeouts to lead the Rabbits defensively.

Wabasso got off to a quick start with a 4-0 lead following the first inning. Runs from Macy Rohlik, Delaina Eis, Sara Carlson and Ava Kodet got the Rabbits on the board. All of them scored on RBIs as well.

Wabasso held BLHS scoreless in its first three at-bats, before scoring its lone run in the top of the fourth.

Yet, Wabasso ended the night in mercy-rule after scoring another five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Johnson singled on an infield fly ball that scored both Camryn Irlbeck and Cassie Bliss, and Rohlik hit the game-winning two-run RBI double on a line drive to left field to run in Johnson and Jenniges.

Along with her nine strikeouts, Jenniges finished her performance with allowing no walks with just two hits and one earned run.

Adding to Johnson’s day at the plate, Jenniges, Rohlik and Kayleigha Johnson each had a pair of hits and RBIs as well.

WABASSO — Delaina Eis kept the good times rolling in the pitching circle in the second of a doubleheader, leading Wabasso to another mercy-rule 14-0 win over Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart Thursday night. She pitched a complete game with six strikeouts, allowing just one hit along with two walks.

Everyone was connecting at the plate for the Rabbits, dominantly outhitting BLHS 15-1.

Irlbeck and Carlson each hit a double in the game, as did Rohlik with a pair of doubles.

Eis also took care of business on the offensive end, going 4 for 4 at-bat, leading the team with four hits and four RBIs, and accounted for a trio of runs.

Rohlik followed with a team-high four runs, and went 3 for 3 at the plate with three RBIs.

Much like the first game, Wabasso took control right from the opening inning with four quick runs, and continued to add to its score as the game progressed capped off with a five-run fifth inning to end the game in run-rule.

Carlson, Eis, Rohlik, Bliss and Alexa Remiger all scored in the fifth inning to officially put Wabasso in mercy-rule territory, all of which came from RBIs as well.

Wabasso moves to 2-0 to start the season, and will look to keep the momentum going when it travels to Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (0-2) today at 4:30 p.m.

EDGERTON — The Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove softball team’s four-run fourth-inning fell short of helping the Falcons avoid the mercy rule in their Red Rock Conference matchup against Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian. The Falcons put up a valiant fight, but a pair of big innings gave the Dutchmen a 15-5 win in five innings.

The Falcons mostly kept E/SWC in check, but the Dutchmen surged ahead in the second with five runs, courtesy of four hits, a pair of walks and an RRC/WWG error. They rallied again in the fourth, building on four hits, four walks, a pair of hit batters and a wild pitch to plate eight runs.

Carlie Ross took the loss for the Falcons, giving up 13 earned runs on 10 hits and 10 walks over five innings.

DeAnn Roiger led RRC/WWG offensively with a double, a single and an RBI. Kendra Schroeder also singled twice.

RRC/WWG scored its first run in the bottom of the second when Leah VanDeWeiele singled with two outs and scored on a Sydney Foster single, cutting the gap to 6-1.

Trailing 15-1, RRC/WWG got one last gasp of hope in the bottom of the fourth. Kennedy Carter walked, Foster reached on an error and Schroeder singled to load the bases with no outs.Wahl reached on another error to plate one run and Grace Ascencio and Leah Carter each drove in another on a pair of ground outs, cutting the gap to 11. Roiger then hit an RBI double to bring the score to 15-5, but a fly out ended the rally and E/SWC retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth to seal the game.

RRC/WWG falls to 1-2 and looks to get back to .500 when it takes on Tracy-Milroy-Balaton today in Tracy at 4:30 p.m.
