MINNEOTA — Carson Javers’ four hits and four shutout innings helped the Minneota baseball team run away with a 10-0 mercy-rule win over Ortonville on Thursday. The Vikings scored five first-inning runs and never looked back to send the Trojans home in five innings.
Javers limited the Trojans to one hit in his start, striking out four of the 13 batters he faced. Myhre closed out the game with a perfect fifth inning, striking out a pair of batters in the process.
“My curveball was working good today, but I was mainly just focused on moving around the zone with my fastball and pounding the zone,” Javers said. “My slider ended up coming in late in the game and it was working good for me, change up worked pretty good when I used it, so everything pretty much worked pretty good.”
Myhre and Javers each singled early in the inning, putting two runners on with two outs. Both runners scored on passed balls, and after walks to Landon Esping and Creed Stassen, another error plated a third run.
The walks kept coming as Logan Pohlen and Seth Paluch drew walks to load the bases, and Sawyer Bradley hit a two-run single before Ortonville got an out at third on the play.
Each of the first four batters in the second inning reached base, Ortonville caught runners stealing and trying to stretch a hit in order to prevent the Vikings from scoring in the frame.
Still, Minneota kept coming in the third. Stassen drew a leadoff walk before the Trojans retired each of the next two batters, but a Bradley single put runners on the corners, a wild pitch scored Stassen. After Ian Myhre walked, Kaden Christensen hit a two-run triple and Javers hit an RBI double to bring the Vikings within a run of the mercy rule.
Christensen’s triple and Javers’ double were the lone extra-base hits of the game. In addition to Javers’ four hits, Myhre reached base four times with a single and three walks and Bradley logged three singles.
After an 0-4 start, Minneota’s caught fire as of late with double-digit runs in two of its last three games and six runs in the other. The Vikings have won all three games. Javers attributed the Vikings’ recent success at the plate to the team’s extra batting practice in the mornings, specifically getting in more live at-bats.
“I think most of it’s just getting comfortable. We’ve had a lot of new faces in our lineup this year, graduated a few guys last year and had to replace different spots,” Minneota head coach Keven Larson said. “Early on, it was tough, just learning what they can and can’t hit. Now we’re going to see a lot of good pitching, their [Ortonville] kid threw well right away, then we just took advantage of a couple mistakes. And I thought our bats the first time or two through the lineup were really disciplined, and that’s the biggest thing that we’re trying to preach right now.”
After Myhre retired the side in order in the top of the fifth, Bradley singled, advanced to third as a Myhre walk and Javers single loaded the bases, Bradley scored on an Esping single to end the game.
Minneota improves to 3-4 after winning back-to-back-to-back games and next hosts Russell-Tyler-Ruthton on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
