Hulzebos’ tallies 2 doubles, 3 RBIs in M/C’s win over Montevideo

MONTEVIDEO — Izabelle Hulzebos had a big hitting night with two doubles, three RBIs, two runs and went 3 for 4 at the plate to help lead the Minneota/Canby softball team to its sixth-straight win Friday night. The Vikings defeated Montevideo 16-4 with the help of a dominating second inning where they scored 10 runs.
The Thunderbirds first took control with four runs right away in the first inning, but the Vikings didn’t let their deficit last long.
McKenzie Bednarek started the Vikings’ rally in the second inning, scoring the first run off a Hulzebos RBI double. Bednarek got herself into scoring position quickly with a triple to left field when she was up to bat.
Sydney Hennen helped send two runners home off an infield single along with a Montevideo defensive error, which happened again two at-bats later where Joelle Otto layed down a bunt, and two more Vikings scored on an error.
Minneota/Canby continued to be honed in and aggressive in its baserunning strategy, and took to a 7-4 lead with a Bednarek two-run RBI single to left field to score Otto and Courtney Antony. Bednarek then scored with the help of a Madison Hennen RBI, while Sydney Hennen sent home two more before the inning ended with another two-run RBI single and a 10-4 lead.
The Vikings held the Thunderhawks quiet the rest of the night, ultimately scoring 16 unanswered runs. They scored two more in the third and capped off the win with four more in the bottom of the fourth.
Bednarek had a team-high four stolen bases and four runs, along with going 2 for 2 at the plate with two RBIs, and a triple. Antony also had three stolen bases.
Madison Hennen got the win in the circle, throwing 10 strikeouts and allowing just one hit in her four innings pitched. She relieved Otto, who pitched the first inning.
Minneota/Canby (9-3) will next host Lakeview for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

BOLD 4, YME 2
OLIVIA — The BOLD softball team came from behind in its final plate appearance to defeat Yellow Medicine East 4-2 Friday night.
The Sting had a one-run lead for three innings, yet the Warrios scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the sixth and held it down defensively in the top of the seventh to secure the comeback.
After BOLD was the first to score in the second inning, YME ran in a pair of runs in the top of the third for a 2-1 lead. Both runs came from a Bayli Sneller RBI single on a line drive to right field, scoring Everra Leenerts and Kourtney Peterson. Leenerts and Peterson both reached base with a single.
The fourth and fifth innings were scoreless for both teams, as the Warriors came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth. The three runs came from a successful sacrifice bunt with a runner on third, along with a Sting defensive error on the same play. The final run also came as the result of a YME error.
The Sting weren’t able to tie the score or take the lead back in their finat at-bat in the top of the seventh, with the three outs coming with a strikeout and pair of ground-outs.
BOLD outhit YME 8-5 and had no errors, to the Sting’s two errors.
Sneller pitched another complete game, tossing six strikeouts with four walks.
YME (4-4) will look to get back on track when it returns home to host Lac qui Parle Valley on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
