Herrick’s homer, Smith’s 3 RBIs lead to Lakers’ first win
Lakeview 9, Ortonville 8
ORTONVILLE — The Lakeview baseball team picked up its first win of the season Tuesday night behind an efficient offensive effort with several players connecting for a hit. Logan Herrick had a homerun while Brooks Smith went 3 for 5 at the plate with a team-high three RBIs and two runs to highlight the Lakers’ 9-8 win over Ortonville.
Six different players for Lakeview got a hit in the win, and the Lakers initially got things started with a 6-0 lead after rallying for four runs in the second inning and another two in the third.
Smith hit a single out to left field to get the Lakers’ offense started in the second inning, and Teague Neuman, Landyn Listul and Jared Bot all scored on the same play off a Trojans’ error. Smith also got the third base on the same play.
Smith was then able to get home with the help of a Braylon Breyfogle RBI single for a 4-0 lead.
Lakeview’s two third-inning runs came from Chase Vogel and Bot, scoring on a walk with bases loaded and off an Ortonville error, respectively.
Yet, Ortonville had a response and fought back into a 6-5 deficit after scoring five straight runs in the bottom of the third.
The next two innings went scoreless, but the Lakers and Trojans got tied up 7-7 following the sixth inning. Lakeview scored one run in the top of the frame, while Ortonville ran in two.
Heading in the final inning, Lakeview made big plays at the plate when it needed it most.
With two outs, Jackson Forslund accounted for the go-ahead run and 8-7 lead after scoring on a passed ball from third. Smith then scored the insurance run right after on an Easton Schimdt RBI single.
Ortonville brought in one run in the bottom of the frame with a sacrifice hit, but Lakeview hung on defensively for the win with a trio of ground-out plays.
Neuman also had a good pitching performance, throwing six strikeouts in his five innings on the mound. He finished with eight hits, four walks and seven earned runs.
Along with Smith, Bot also had two runs in the win.
Lakeview (1-4) will look to keep up the momentum when it finishes its three-game road trip at Dawson-Boyd on Thursday with a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.

TMB 4, Dawson-Boyd 3
MILROY — A strong start at the plate helped the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton baseball team prevail for a 4-3 competitive win against Dawson-Boyd Tuesday night.
After getting three quick outs to open the game between a pair of Connor Lanoue strikeouts and an infield ground-out, the Panthers got right to work on the offensive end and score three runs in the first inning.
Jackson Kruse hit a big two-run RBI double on a line drive to center field to score Taylor Squires and Lanoue. Squires was initially hit by a pitch while Lanoue had an infield single.
Kruse then found his way home with the help of an Aiden Sanow line drive center as well.
Dawson-Boyd was able to bring that back within a run and cut into a 3-2 deficit with a pair of runs in the third inning.
Ace Larson and Eli Olson both scored, on a Kam Sather RBI single and as the result of a Lanoue balk, respectively.
TMB’s Griffin Zick was able to score in the fifth inning to give the Panthers a little bit of breathing room with two innings to go, up 4-2. He scored on a Sanow base hit.
Zick’s run was ultimately just enough for TMB to hang on for the win as the Blackjacks kept up their fight and scored once more in the sixth inning with Sather scoring on a wild pitch. But, Lanoue earned his redemption and struck out the next batter to seal TMB’s victory.
Nathan Hansen and Lanoue both pitched a complete game. Hansen finished with four strikeouts while allowing six hits, four walks and four earned runs for Dawson-Boyd. For TMB, Lanoue tossed seven strikeouts while allowing four hits, three earned runs and one walk.
Dawson-Boyd (4-2) will look to get back on track when it hosts Lakeview (1-4) on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
TMB (2-3) will stay home to host Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg on Thursday, also at 4:30 p.m.

MCC 18, E/SWC 0 (5 inn.)
EDGERTON — Dugan Kluis finished a triple away from hitting for the cycle in the Murray County Central baseball team’s Red Rock Conference matchup against Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian Tuesday night. The Rebels rode a homer each from Kluis and Krew Schneider to a lopsided 18-0 win in five innings, keeping MCC undefeated at 7-0 on the season.
Kluis broke the game open early with a solo home run in the top of the first.
MCC’s offense went dormant from there until the third inning. Carter Hanson reached on an error and Teague Meyer singled before a Tristan Behrends triple scored them both to open the floodgates.
Behrends scored on a Schneider single before Carson Lewis walked and Cayden Veldhuisen reached on an error to load the bases, and a walk to Danny Larson and Gabe Tentinger getting hit by a pitch each pushed across a run. Hanson followed up with a two-run single to cap off the seven-run inning.
Kluis also earned the pitching win for MCC, striking out 10 batters over four scoreless innings. He limited the Dutchmen to a pair of hits and three walks. In relief, Behrends struck out a pair of batters while giving up one hit in a scoreless fifth to close out the game.
If the seven-run third wasn’t enough, the Rebels continued to hammer home runs in the fourth. Schneider hit a two-run homer in the inning’s second at-bat, following a Kluis double, and Veldhuisen reached on an error, Larson walked and Tentinger was hit by a pitch to reload the bases. A passed ball scored one run, a Hanson single drove in another, and a Meyer sacrifice fly drove in a third as E/SWC picked up its second out of the inning.
The Rebels continued to crush the ball from there, with back-to-back RBI singles from Behrends and Kluis and Schneider reaching on an error to plate yet another run. An RBI double from Lewis and a bases-loaded walk to Tentinger capped off the 10-run frame with an 18-0 MCC lead.
MCC, now 7-0 on the season, next hosts Adrian/Ellsworth on Friday at 4:30 p.m.

Minneota 6 KMS 2
SUNBURG — The Minneota baseball team strung together some offense down the final stretch of its Camden Conference matchup against Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Tuesday night, scoring a pair of runs in each of the last two innings to claim a 6-2 win.
A Kaden Christensen double and Carson Javers getting hit by a pitch to start the sixth, and a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout put the tying runs on second and third with two outs. Still, Creed Stassen came up strong in the clutch with a two-run go-ahead double.
In addition to driving in the game-winning runs, Stassen had a big day on the hill for the Vikings. The junior pitcher threw the first 6 2/3 innings, striking out 12 batters while limiting KMS to one earned run on six hits and three walks. Mason Javers took over for the final out after Stassen hit the pitch limit, giving up a walk before getting the final out.
Minneota added another pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Sawyer Bradley and Carson Javers each singled to put two on with two outs, and Mason Javers added another single to load the bases. Landon Esping capitalized with a two-run double to make the score 6-2.
Carson Javers doubled with two outs in the first before scoring on a wild pitch, but KMS answered in the bottom of the frame with a tying run. Ian Myhre gave the Vikings the lad back in the third by walking and eventually scoring on another wild pitch, but KMS again answered in the bottom to keep the game tied.

Wabasso 7, GFW 3
WABASSO — A four-run fourth inning gave the Rabbits all the offense they needed to top Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop in a Tuesday night Tomahawk conference battle. The Rabbits never trailed in the game, but the big inning put the game away for a 7-3 Wabasso victory.
Wabasso held a narrow 3-1 lead heading into the fourth, but Bennyt Hillesheim walked before scoring on a Drew Kemp double to give Wabasso an extra bit of insurance. Brady Baune was hit by a pitch before Jack Burns hit a two-run double, and Jayden Remiger hit an RBI triple to make the score 7-1.
Jack Burns pitched all seven innings of the win for Wabasso, limiting GFW to a pair of earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
Kemp scored the game’s first run when he walked, stole second and scored on a Brooks Baune sacrifice fly in the top of the first.
GFW scored a tying run in the second, but Wabasso regained its lead for good when a Baune walk and a Burns single put the go-ahead runs on base and Remiger hit a three-run triple to make the score 3-1.
GFW scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but a 4-6-3 double play ended the game.
Wabasso improves to 2-4 and next goes on the road to take on Springfield on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
