Fuentes Cervantes, Wingerter earn All-American honors

MARSHALL — Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball players Emmanuel Fuentes Cervantes and Fermin Wingerter have earned All-American honors by the National Wheelchair Basketball Association, announced Thursday.

The senior duo are currently competing with the No. 6 Mustangs for a national championship in the National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament.

Fuentes Cervantes was named to the NWBA All-American first team for the third consecutive season, and Wingerter earned second-team honors.

Leading the team with averaging 25.7 points a game so far, Fuentes Cervantes is shooting 44% from the field and 33% from the perimeter with 51 makes on the season. He also leads the team at 71% from the charity stripe, where he’s shot 49 of 69 entering Friday.

Fuentes Cervantes also leads the team in rebounds with 10.3 a game, 6.5 assists and 1.4 steals. He was the NWBA Player of the Year following his sophomore campaign in the 2023-24 season.

Wingerter is averaging 13.7 points on 49% shooting from the field and 4.75 rebounds a game.

SMSU opened the tournament with a 71-49 win over No. 11 Eastern Washington University on Wednesday, and took down defending national champions No. 3 Arizona 66-57 in the quarterfinals on Thursday in Tucson, Arizona.

With the win, the Mustangs now advance to the semifinals and will take on second-seeded Auburn today at 5 p.m.
