Bothun, Sather go yard in Blackjacks’ offensive explosion

DAWSON — Colten Bothun and Kameron Sather each homered in a big day for the Dawson-Boyd baseball team in Camden Conference play against Lakeview on Thursday. The Blackjacks exploded for 10 first-inning runs and never looked back, cruising to a 16-4 mercy-rule win in five innings.

The Blackjacks wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, with Eli Olson getting hit by the game’s first pitch and scoring on a Bothun single. Sather then drew a walk before Nathan Hansen hit a two-run single and Holland Schacherer followed up with an RBI double to make the score 4-0.

Aedyn Dahl walked before a pair of strikeouts put two away for the Lakers, but Evan Ibarra singled in one run, Olson reached on a dropped third strike to push across another, and a passed ball pushed across a third. Bothun then hit a two-run homer and consecutive doubles from Sather and Hansen brought the score to 10-0.

Hansen and Schacherer each logged three hits on the day, including two doubles for Schacherer. Hansen also tied Bothun with a game-high three RBIs.

Schacherer earned the win in his four-inning start for the Blackjacks, giving up a pair of earned runs on five hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Bothun pitched a scoreless fifth to close out the game, striking out a batter and giving up one walk before the Blackjacks got a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.

Logan Herrick took the loss for Lakeview, giving up nine earned runs on five hits and a pair of walks while getting two outs. In relief, Jackston Forslund gave up four earned and three unearned runs on nine hits and three walks over 3 1/3 innings of relief.

Dawson-Boyd tacked on another three runs in the second on a two-run double by Olson and Sather reaching on an error with two outs. Ryker Gruwell also hit an RBI double in the third, and a solo homer from Sather and Dahl reaching on an error in the fourth capped off the Blackjacks’ scoring.

Lakeview broke up the shutout in the fourth when Jared Bot walked and scored on a Chase Vogel ground out. Trailing by 15 an inning later, Brooks Smith reached on an error and Herrick singled before Braylon Breyfogle hit an RBI double and Easton Schmidt hit a two-run double. Yet, Dawson-Boyd made a pitching change and got out of the frame with the mercy rule intact.

Dawson-Boyd improves to 5-2 and heads out to Madison to take on Lac qui Parle Valley for its net game on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Lakeview falls to 1-5 and next hosts Lac qui Parle Valley on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

CANBY — Cody Stoll’s pair of RBIs and the lights-out pitching of Jace Rangaard helped the Canby Lancers survive a Camden Conference pitchers’ duel against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Thursday. The Lancers first took the lead in the first inning and held TMB without an earned run on the day, claiming a 3-1 win.

Rangaard pitched all seven innings for the Lancers, limiting the Panthers to one unearned run on three hits and a pair of walks with four strikeouts.

Cash Antony drew a leadoff walk for Canby in the bottom of the first, and Will Abrahamson reached on an error and Cody Stoll walked to load the bases with no outs. Jace Sigler drove in the go-ahead run when Antony scored as TMB turned a double play, but a pop out ended the inning without further damage after Canby reloaded the bases on a pair of hit batters.

The Lancers rallied with two outs in the fourth, again starting with an Antony single and Abrahamson reaching on an error. Stoll drove in both runners with a single before David Schuh got a strikeout to end the inning.

Schuh pitched all six innings in the loss, giving up three unearned runs on three hits and four walks with five strikeouts.

Each team finished with three hits in the game, coming from Antony, Stoll and Hunter Kack for Canby, and Taylor Squires, Schuh and Aiden Sanow for the Panthers. Antony also walked three times.

Squires broke up the Lancers’ shutout bid in the top of the sixth, hitting a leadoff single and scoring on a passed ball with two outs. Still, a fly out ended the inning and Rangaard retired the seventh in order to end the game.

Canby improves to 3-1 and looks to keep its momentum rolling when it hosts Central Minnesota Christian on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

TMB falls to 2-4 and next takes on Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg in Tracy on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
