Marshall 6, Andover 1

ANDOVER — Eli Alcorn’s strong start on the mound helped the Marshall baseball team remain undefeated in its Friday non-conference matchup against Andover. Alcorn threw 4 1/3 no-hit innings for the Tigers, and the Marshall bats backed him up for a 6-1 win.

Alcorn struck out six batters over the course of his scoreless start, limiting Andover to just five walks and no hits before he was relieved by Noah Pieper. In relief, Pieper struck out nine batters while giving up a run on three hits and a pair of walks over 2 2/3 frames.

Andrew Stelter scored the go-ahead run for Marshall in the top of the fourth. He reached base with a leadoff walk before Andover retired each of the next two batters, but the Tigers capitalized on back-to-back Andover errors to send Stelter home for a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers put the game away in the top of the sixth. Trae Bailey led off the inning with a double and scored on JR Vierstraete’s subsequent double, and Levi Maeyaert singled home Stelter for a 3-0 lead.

The rally continued as Pieper was hit by a pitch to put two runners on and Ethan Weedman drove in a run on a ground out. With two outs, Pieper then scored on a passed ball to bring the score to 5-0.

Andover scored their lone run of the game on an RBI ground out in the bottom of the frame, but they weren’t able to sustain any momentum. Chase Alcorn walked and scored on a Maeyaert two-out single in the top of the seventh and Pieper closed out the save in the bottom of the frame.

Marshall improves to 6-0 on the year and next hosts Hutchinson at Legion Field on Monday at 5 p.m.
