MARSHALL — Seeding for the Class AAA state girls basketball tournament was announced over the weekend, with the Marshall Tigers earning the third seed to set them up with a first-round matchup against No. 6 Totino-Grace on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Minneapolis.
The state quarterfinals will be played at the University of Minnesota’s Maturi Pavilion in Minneapolis, and the semifinals and championship game will be played at Williams Arena. Consolation bracket and third-place matches will be played at Concordia-St. Paul’s Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul.
Marshall compiled a 25-4 record on the season, steamrolling its way through the Section 2AAA tournament for its second consecutive state tournament appearance. The Tigers reached the state championship game last year after also being seeded third, but Marshall fell to top-seeded Benilde-St. Margaret’s 73-57 in the final at Williams Arena.
With a win on Wednesday, Marshall could face a rematch of the state title game in this year’s semifinals; the winner of the Tigers’ game against Totino-Grace will play either No. 2 BSM or No. 7 Rock Ridge in the semifinals at 2 p.m., while the losers of the games will match up in the consolation bracket.
Marshall enters the tournament in pursuit of its third state title after going back-to-back in 2001 and 2002. The Tigers have made the state championship five times since then but lost each of the five appearances, including a triple-overtime loss to Park Center in 2014
Stewartville earned the top seed in the tournament after going 27-1 during the regular season, jumping up a spot from the final coaches poll after top-ranked Orono fell to Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the Section 6AAA championship. Stewartville takes on No. 8 Willmar in its quarterfinal match, while No. 4 Cretin-Derham hall and No. 5 Hill-Murray face off in the other game on the left side of the bracket.
State quarterfinal tickets are available online at mshsl.org/tickets. Adult tickets cost $17.50, student tickets cost $11.50, and a daily pass for all of the games is available on-site for $22 for adults and $14 for students.
