State-qualifying Tigers earn five All-Area nods to lead the pack

MARSHALL — All five of the Marshall girls basketball team’s starters were named to the Independent’s All-Area teams, announced on Thursday. The Tigers’ starting backcourt duo of Taleigha Bigler and Reese Drake were both named to the All-Area First team, along with Westbrook-Walnut Grove center Leah Carter and forwards Bailey Mortenson of Yellow Medicine East and Anah Schmidt of Lakeview.
As for the Marshall front court, forward Avery Schneekloth was named to the second team while Avery Fahl and Danielle Nubile each earned third-team honors.
Drake and Bigler were both named to the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association’s Class AAA All-State team, and Drake was also named to the Star Tribune’s All-State team that encompassed all four classes. Drake led Marshall in points, rebounds and assists, while Bigler led the team in steals.
Carter and Drake finished the season as the Independent area’s leading scorers, each with 19.3 points per game. Drake was also the area’s assist leader with six per game while Carter was effective on the glass with 13.3 rebounds.
Lakeview’s Anah Schmidt was a dominant paint presence for the Lakers, helping her team to its first 20-win season in five years. She averaged an area-leading 2.3 blocks per game along with 12.4 rebounds and 15.1 assists. Lakeview guard Brynn Stensrud, a Class A All-State selection, was also named to the Independent’s second team.

Danielle Nubile, Marshall
Mortenson also averaged 13.4 rebounds and 18 points per game in her sophomore season with the Sting, reaching her 1,000th career point to earn the distinction of the lone non-senior on the Independent’s first team.
Wabasso third-teamer Kenley Guetter led the area in rebounds with 15.6 per game, and she also scored 13.5 points per game to average a double-double in her freshman season to help the Rabbits make a major step forward this year.
Canby senior Brynn Kockelman led the area in 3-pointers made with 72 on 29% shooting, edging out Fahl’s 68 on a 45% clip on the third team.
The second team also included a pair of walking double-doubles in Minneota’s Jaylyn Coequyt and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton’s Paisley Thooft. Coequyt averaged 17.8 and 9.6 rebounds for the Vikings, and Thooft averaged 10.6 points and 13 rebounds for RTR.
MCC’s Ava Deacon led the area in steals with an average of 5.9 per game, helping to lead the Rebels to the subsection championship game where they pushed top-seeded Hills-Beaver Creek to the brink before falling by 8 points.

Gretchen Lanoue, TMB
Tracy-Milroy-Balaton sophomore Gretchen Lanoue also made a major step forward as a scorer, rebounder and shooter this season to earn third-team honors.
Statistics used for the All-Area teams were collected at the end of the regular season in order to mitigate the influence of team success on this individual accolade, though players’ overall impact on winning was taken into account when relevant.
The Independent will announce its Girls Basketball Player of the Year and Coach of the Year in Saturday’s Independent sports section.
