SMSU stretches win streak to 7 with trio of mercy-rule wins
TUCSON, Ariz. — The Southwest Minnesota State University baseball team continued to roll through the weekend, extending its winning streak to seven games with four consecutive mercy-rule wins. SMSU defeated NAIA Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 13-1 in seven innings on Saturday, took down Division III Hamline 14-1 in seven innings on Sunday and picked up a 17-0 win over Dakota Wesleyan in seven innings again on Monday.
SMSU is now 11-5 on the season (2-4 NSIC) and wraps up its Arizona trip today with a noon game against Carthage (Wis.). From there, the Mustangs prepare to kick off the 2026 Legion Field season by hosting Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe Concordia-St. Paul for a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday.
GAME 1 (7 inn.)
SMSU 13, Dakota Wesleyan 1
Jameson Quinn tied his career high with 10 strikeouts over six innings on the hill for SMSU in its Saturday matchup against Dakota Wesleyan, setting the tone for a Mustang victory. He limited Tigers to one run on four hits and did not walk or hit a batter in the game.
Dylan Webb closed out the win with a scoreless seventh inning, giving up a hit and a walk with a strikeout.
SMSU came out the gates swinging. Levi Lampert drew a leadoff walk before scoring on a Jared Cortez single, and a Tyler Froland single and a Tanner Rezny walk loaded the bases with one out. Carter Lang then drove in Cortez on a Dakota Wesleyan error, and a Henry Hammrich hit-by-pitch and Brock Woitalla walk ended the frame with a 4-0 Mustang lead.
Lampert led the Mustangs with four RBIs, two extra-base hits and a walk on the day. Among those hits was a three-run homer in the seventh to seal the mercy-rule win, and an RBI double in the sixth to kick off a four-run inning.
SMSU also got a pair of singles each from Woitalla and Froland, as well as a pair of RBIs from Froland and a walk from Woitalla.
Rezny scored Davis on a sacrifice fly in the fifth to give the Mustangs a 5-0 lead, but Mason Riley responded with an RBI single in the sixth to give Dakota Wesleyan its lone run of the day.
Broc Berry was charged with the loss for Dakota Wesleyan, giving up six earned runs on five hits and four walks over 5 2/3, striking out seven batters. AJ Wilber gave up four earned runs in relief without getting an out, and Lucas Koepsell got one out while giving up a pair of earned runs.
GAME 2 (7 inn.)
SMSU 14, Hamline 1
Henry Hammrich and Levi Lampert each logged five total bases for SMSU in its game against Hamline on Saturday, with Hammrich also contributing four RBIs as the Mustangs ran away with a 14-1 win.
SMSU got off to a strong start with RBI singles from Evan Behn, Wheeler and Hammrich giving the Mustangs a 3-0 lead after the first. The Mustang batters continued to plug away in the second with sacrifice hits from Behn and Froland each driving in one run before Hammrich clobbered a three-run homer to right-center field for an 8-0 lead.
Ryan Bell picked up the win on the mound for SMSU, going five innings while allowing one earned run on four hits with five strikeouts to improve to 2-2. In relief, Lincoln Vasgaard pitched a pair of scoreless frames, striking out three batters with one hit allowed.
Cortez hit a ground-rule double to left-center field to drive in a run in the third, scored on a wild pitch, and Wheeler followed with a two-run double to give SMSU a 12-0 lead before an RBI single in the fourth gave Hamline its only run of the game.
Back-to-back hit batters and an error loaded the bases with no outs for SMSU in the fifth. Hamline responded with a 9-6-3 triple play on a Dahlager fly-out, but Josh Berreth still scored on the play to bring the Mustangs’ lead to 14-1.
Ben McCrady gave up three earned runs on three hits and a pair of walks in one inning to take the loss. Hamline had six pitchers take the mound in the game, with Troy Spellman’s two innings with one unearned run allowed making him the team’s lone player to go more than one inning and the lone player to not give up an earned run.
GAME 3 (7 inn.)
SMSU 17, Dakota Wesleyan 0
Tad Tjaden and Ryan Dalager pitched a combined shutout for SMSU in its Monday matchup against Dakota Wesleyan, giving SMSU its fourth consecutive mercy-rule win.
Tjaden earned his first collegiate win by throwing the first five innings. He struck out seven batters while giving up a single and three walks.
In relief, Ryan Dalager — a redshirt freshman out of Minneota — pitched two perfect innings, striking out three of the six batters he faced.
On the offensive side of the plate, Woitalla hit a three-run home run in the second to give SMSU a 10-0 lead and Lampert hit a two-run homer in the fifth to bring the score to 13-0.
Caden King was the lone Mustang with multiple hits in the game, hitting three singles and walking twice while scoring four runs. Behn also reached base multiple times with three walks.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning with a series of singles and never looked back.
SMSU loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, resulting in a pair of runs on a walk and a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.
