Rohlik’s 3 hits pace Wabasso past Marshall in season opener

WABASSO — Aylah Jenniges’ complete game in the circle with five strikeouts and Macy Rohlik’s three hits helped lead the Wabasso softball team to a 6-1 win over Marshall in its season opener Monday night.

Wabasso was quick to get on the board and scored two runs in its first at-bat after Jenniges scored after tagging third off a Delaina Eis fly out to right field, with Rohlik scoring on the same play following a Marshall error at third base.

Along with a run in each the third and sixth innings, the Rabbits added to their lead with another two runs in the fifth inning. Audrey Johnson scored on a Rohlik RBI single, and Rohlik made her way around the bases and scored on a Sara Carlson line-drive single.

The Tigers’ lone run came in the top of the third inning, with Brynlee Dieken scoring on a Sara Dallmann ground ball.

Wabasso had eight hits and one error in the win, to Marshall’s five hits and three errors.

Jenniges allowed two walks and one run along with her five strikeouts.

For the Tigers, Alissa Moen pitched four strikeouts while allowing one walk, five runs and seven hits in her 4 1/3 innings in the circle.

Marshall (0-1) will next travel to Worthington next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., while Wabasso (1-0) will head over to New Ulm Cathedral next Monday at 5 p.m.

Sleepy Eye 4, RRC/WWG 3

WALNUT GROVE — The Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove softball team wasn’t able to hold onto its early lead in its season opener against Sleepy Eye on Monday. The Falcons held a 3-1 lead through the first six innings, but a three-run seventh gave the Indians what they needed to claim a 4-3 win.

A walk and a single brought the winning run to the plate for Sleepy Eye, and an error allowed a run to score with no outs. A sacrifice fly drove in the tying run, and a passed ball with two outs allowed the winning run to score for the Indians.

Kendra Schroeder drew a walk with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to put the tying run on base, but a strikeout ended the game with Schroeder stranded on first.

Carlie Ross pitched all seven innings for RRC/WWG, limiting Sleepy Eye to a pair of earned runs on five hits with nine walks and six strikeouts.She also had a hit and a stolen base at the plate.

RRC/WWG struck first when Kennedy Carter drew a walk, stole second and scored on a Ross single in the second. Evelyn Rentschler replaced Ross on first as a courtesy runner and scored on a Sydney Foster single to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.

Sleepy Eye answered with a run of its own in the fifth, but RRC/WWG got that run back in the bottom of the sixth when Natasha Wahl walked and scored on a Leah Carter single.

RRC/WWG falls to 0-1 on the year and next takes on Springfield on the road on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
