Mustangs open N.D. road trip with pair of losses to UMary
BISMARCK, N.D. – In a day the Mustangs would like to forget, the Southwest Minnesota State baseball team (13-9) fell to the UMary Marauders (8-10) in a pair of 5-1 contests on Friday afternoon.
GAME ONE
Cody Wichmann (2-1) pitched the first five innings for SMSU, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with three walks, striking out two Marauders in the process. Lincoln Vasgaard pitched the sixth inning, walking two batters.
The Mustangs ended the game with two hits courtesy of Nathan Wheeler and Henry Hammrich.
SMSU struck first in the game as Connor Davis hit a groundout with the bases loaded, which allowed Levi Lampert to score.
Kieran Gaffney cleared the bases for UMary in the second inning with a triple to right center field, before Cullen Wilson added the fourth run of the inning for the Marauders with a single to center field.
Hank Griffin scored the last run of the game in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly to left field, resulting in a double play for the Mustangs.
UMary’s Lucas Burgum pitched all seven innings for the Marauders, striking out six Mustang batters. Gaffney and Mason Siant Hilarie had two hits for the Marauders, leading the team.
GAME TWO
Jameson Quinn (2-3) pitched five innings for SMSU, allowing five earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. Dylan Webb pitched 2 2/3 innings while Ryan Dalager pitched the final 1/3 inning.
Levi Lampert had two of the Mustangs six hits in the ballgame, with Connor Davis, Tyler Froland, Brock Woitalla, and Nathan Wheeler providing hits.
Wheeler opened the scoring in the second inning with a two-out RBI double to bring home Davis from first base.
The Marauders responded in the next half inning with four runs of their own. Hank Griffin began with a solo home run, while Mikey Ramirez hit a 2-run triple to right center. Isaac Pegors sent Ramirez home with a groundout making it a 4-1 game after two innings.
Hank Griffin scored the final run of the day in the fifth inning off a wild pitch from Quinn.
Aiden Johnson (1-1) pitched the first seven innings for UMary allowing one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts. Cullen Wilson pitched the remaining two innings. Griffin and Kieran Gaffney each had two hits for UMary.
The Mustangs and the Marauders finish their four-game series tomorrow beginning at 12 p.m.
