Mustangs finish 9th at SMSU Challenge

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. — The Southwest Minnesota State University golf team placed ninth out of 10 teams at the SMSU Challenge on Friday, compiling a team score of 129-over during the two-day tournament.

Meghan Pundsack led SMSU in the tournament, building on her 12-over performance on Thursday with a 10-over on Friday to move up into a tie for 18th. She was particularly strong on the back 9, shooting a 3-over with a birdie on hole 15.

Allie Nedved and Carly Hamman also placed in the top 50 for the Mustangs, finishing 42nd and 48th. Nedved shot a 13-over to finish the tournament at 34-over, jumping 11 spots from her Thursday finish, while Hamman closed at 37-over after her 25-over Friday round dropped her 18 spots. Nedved and Hamman each birdied hole 17.

The Mustangs finished eight strokes ahead of last-place Bemidji State and four strokes back of eighth-place Minnesota State University-Moorhead. The Dragons and Beavers flipped spots around SMSU after the Dragons shot a 56-over, Bemidji shot a 76-over and SMSU held strong with a 64-over.

Colorado Mesa won the tournament at 55-over, followed by Augustana and Metropolitan State University-Denver.

Berkeley Steffen rounded out the Mustang scorers with a 19-over on Friday, closing the tournament in a tie for 50th at 39-over.

Natalie Appel and Roni Hook also competed for SMSU, placing 55th at 47-over and 59th at 60-over.

Colorado Mesa’s Payton Panzeri was the top individual in the 62-player tournament with a two-day score of 5-over.

SMSU returns to action on Monday, hosting the SMSU Classic at Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz. The two-day event tees off at 11:16 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday.
