Mustang golf places 10th in SMSU Challenge

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. — The Southwest Minnesota State University golf team wrapped up its Arizona trip on Tuesday with the final day of the third tournament it hosted. The Mustangs compiled a two-day score of 123-over at the SMSU Classic, placing last in the 10-team event after shooting a 56-over on Monday and a 67-over on Tuesday.

In addition to the 10 officially scored teams, 12 total teams competed with Nebraska Kearney and UW-La Crosse sending their B-teams as well. The Mustangs finished 14 strokes ahead of La Crosse’s B-team, but three strokes back of its ninth-place A-team.

Berkley Steffen was the Mustangs’ top performer in the tournament, placing 40th in the field of 69 golfers with a 23-over. She shot an 11-over on Monday and followed it up with a 12-over 82 on Tuesday, including four pars in her final five holes.

Meghan Pundsack shot a 17-over on Tuesday, dropping to 44th with a two-day total of 27-over despite notching a pair of birdies on the back nine of her first round, while Allie Nedved also shot a 17-over to finish in 46th at 30-over. Nedved birdied three times on the back nine on Monday.

Carly Hamman rounded out the Mustang scorers in 65th at 43-over following her 21-over round on Tuesday. Natalie Appel and Roni Hook also competed in the tournament, tying for 67th at 45-over.

The Mustangs return to action on April 6, heading to Elmwood Golf Course in Sioux Falls, S.D. for the Augustana Invitational. Each of the two days of competition will begin at 10 a.m.
