Marsh maintains spotless record in Mustang walk-off

BARTOW, Fla. — The Southwest Minnesota State University softball team pulled out a doubleheader sweep at THE Spring Games on Friday. The Mustangs pulled out a walk-off win over Northwood (Mich.) in their opener, 8-7, and dominated Glenville State (W. Va.) 9-1 in five innings in the second game.

SMSU improves to 12-6 on the season with the wins and next plays a doubleheader at Tampa (Fla.) today at 1 p.m.

GAME 1

SMSU 8, Northwood 7

The Mustangs trailed 7-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh when Paris Van Dyke singled and Kaylee Hafermann reached on an error to bring the winning run to the plate. With one out and runners in scoring position, Carley Stych hit an RBI single to push across Van Dyke, Riley Kramolisch drove in Hafermann on a ground out and Grace Anderson reached on a throwing error to drive in Stych for the win.

Jordyn Marsh remained undefeated in the circle for SMSU this season, throwing all seven innings to bring her record to 9-0. She struck out three batters on the day, surrendering four earned runs on 12 hits and three walks.

Aliza Acker scored Kramolisch in the bottom of the first with an RBI double, but Northwood responded with a sacrifice fly in the second and a pair of unearned runs in the fourth to take the lead.

Acker logged a single and a double on the day for SMSU, and Kramolisch and Hafermann each singled twice. Emma Humpal and Anderson also each raced base twice, coming on two walks for Humpal and a single and a walk for Anderson.

Trailing by a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, a Kramolisch single and an Anderson walk put the tying run on base with two outs. Marsh came in as a pinch hitter and drilled an RBI single to center field, and Van Dyke reached on an error that pushed another pair of runs across the plate for a 4-3 SMSU lead.

Still, Northwood responded with a series of singles in the top of the sixth to take a 6-4 lead, and the Timberwolves answered Anderson’s RBI single in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh.

Dalaney Gage pitched the first five innings for Northwood, giving up two earned and two unearned runs on seven hits in the no-decision. Kamden Binney was tagged with the loss after giving up another pair of earned runs over 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Ashley Ziel led Northwood’s batters with a double, a single and an RBI, and Jenna Kowalski, Chloe Cooper and Delanie Gale each singled twice.

GAME 2 (5 inn.)

SMSU 9, Glenville State 1

After gutting out a tight win in its first game of the day, SMSU dropped the hammer to earn a mercy-rule win in the second against Glenville State. Ramsey Hopp, Kramolisch, Humpal and Hafermann each had multiple hits on the day, as well as a team-leading four RBIs for Hopp.

Hopp gave the Mustangs their first runs of the game with a two-run single in the first. She also buckled down on the mound, striking out three batters while limiting Glenville State to one run on two hits after opening the game with nine consecutive batters retired.

SMSU continued to build up its lead in the third with RBI singles from Hopp and Hafermann, and the Mustangs added four more runs in the fourth to bring the run rule into play.
