BURNSVILLE — Southwest Minnesota State University junior and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton 2023 graduate Cody Wichmann has earned a pair of Pitcher of the Week honors this week by the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) for the Central Region.
Wichmann earned the honor after a stellar performance against Minot State on Monday, where he pitched all nine innings while allowing just six hits and one walk, along with one unearned run which didn’t come until the bottom of the ninth inning, and tossed six strikeouts. The Mustangs won the game 5-1.
So far on the early start to the season as of Thursday, Wichmann has pitched 15 innings for the Mustangs with a team-best 2.40 ERA and 13 strikeouts so far.
Wichmann also pitched on Feb. 15, where he threw a career-high seven strikeouts through six innings with two walks against Minnesota Crookston where the Mustangs came away with a 9-6 win.
SMSU sits 3-4 overall and 2-4 in NSIC play to start the season, and next returns to the diamond today for a doubleheader against Truman State (4-4) in Kirksville, Missouri, for two non-conference matchups. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m., with the second game to take place directly after.
The two will also play in another doubleheader on Saturday at the same time. All four matchups will be seven-inning games.
