Tigers spread scoring load in road win

NEW ULM — When Brooklyn Lewis turned a Marshall turnover into a basket, it cut the Tigers’ lead to 26-19 midway through the first half.
But that was the closest the Eagles got the rest of the game.
Marshall followed up that basket with a 19-0 run en route to a 85-45 win over the Eagles Thursday night in a Big South Conference girls basketball game.
Avery Schneekloth led Marshall (17-3, 9-0) with 18 points. Reese Drake added 16, with Danielle Nubile, Madi Panka and Taleigha Bigler each ending the night with another 14. Drake and Bigler also led Marshall in assists, with Bigler dishing out six dimes without a turnover and Drake distributing eight assists on five turnovers.
Brooklyn Lewis led New Ulm (16-6, 9-2) with 18 points.
“Marshall is a very tough team — they are very well-coached and very athletic,” New Ulm head coach Mitch Lewis said. “We showed we could play with them for a little bit and then we just ran out of gas. They can go 10 players deep and we go one or two deep.”
The Eagles had some life when they trailed by just 7 points at 26-19 before the Tigers’ press started to give New Ulm troubles.
And it was a half that despite making only 3 of 14 shots from beyond the arc, the Tigers had a 21-point lead.
Marshall increased its lead to 67-33 led by two 3s from Nubile, with Avery Fahl and Panka each connecting on 3s.
“We left their shooters open — we helped on the drive a little too much — and their shooters got open looks,” coach Lewis said. “That is what happens against a team like that.”
Both of the Eagles’ two losses in conference play this season came at the hands of the Tigers and both were double-digit losses.
Marshall outrebounded New Ulm 31-19 behind Schneekloth’s seven boards.
Marshall returns to its home court to host St. Peter (11-8) tonight at 7:15 p.m.
