ST. PAUL — The Minnesota individual state wrestling championships kicked off Thursday morning, with a trio of Marshall Tigers being among those to advance through the round of 16 to today’s quarterfinals.

In the Class AA tournament, Marshall had reigning state champion Lincoln Christenson opened his state run with a 19-3 technical fall in 121 while Brayden Chandler got a first-period pin in 160. Tyler Kraft also advanced for Marshall in 189 with an 8-4 decision.

Keynan Coequyt and Tyson Louwagie will continue their postseason in the consolation bracket, after Coequyt fell to Jackson Stensrud by major decision in 127 while Louwagie lost by 21-5 technical fall to Slade Barnett.

Esther Say also represented Marshall on the girls side, falling in the third set of her 170-match against Esparanza Calvillo and continuing her tournament in the consolation bracket.

Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo United sent three wrestlers to Class A states, with Eli Olson surviving in 114 and Benjamin Gunlogson advancing in 145. Each of the two wrestlers won their round-of-16 match via pinfall. Kameron Sather, meanwhile, lost by technical fall and will now compete in the consolation bracket.

It was a busy day for the Minneota wrestling team in Class A, as the Vikings sent eight individuals to the state tournament before competing in the third-place match later in the day on Wednesday. Seven of Minneota’s eight wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals, including Heydan Danielson in 107, Blake Mead in 133, Adam DeVlaeminck in 139, Mason Javers in 160, Brock Fier in 172, Randy Sorensen in 189 and Cael Fier in 215.

Canby’s Jordan DePestel and Fulda/Murray County Central’s Colby Kesteloot will both compete in the heavyweight quarterfinals today, Kesteloot after getting a first-round bye and DePestel after earning a 7-2 decision in the tournament opener.

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton’s David Schuh earned a 14-7 decision in 139 to open the tournament.

Today’s quarterfinals and round-1 wrestlebacks will start at 9 a.m., and the round 2 wrestlebacks and individual semifinals will begin at 4 p.m. at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul.
