Swanson’s milestone night falls short in St. Cloud

ST. CLOUD — Audrey Swanson had a record night scoring a career-high 31 points along with scoring her 1,000th point, but the Southwest Minnesota State University womens basketball team came up short on the road in an 82-67 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference loss to St. Cloud State Thursday night.

Swanson became the 26th player in the SMSU women’s program to reach the 1,000-milestone mark in the third quarter following a 3-pointer from the left wing. She finished the night shooting 11 of 18 from the floor.

Nicole Maenke followed with 11 points with a team-high trio of 3-pointers, while Natalie Nielsen went 4 of 4 from the foul line to finish with 10 points and a team-best 11 rebounds.

The Mustangs’ 19 turnovers hurt them down the stretch, to the Huskies’ 12, who scored an additional 27 points off SMSU’s turnovers.

SCSU got off to a hot start with a 26-12 lead in the first quarter.

SMSU put up a late fight in the final quarter, although the comeback bid ultimately came up short.

Swanson hit a jumpshot in the paint with 5:42 to play to pull SMSU within 6 points, down 65-59, but the Huskies responded on a 7-1 run to build back up a 72-60 lead with 4:13 to go.

The Mustangs got off on a troubling foot, facing a 21-2 deficit in the first quarter to start the night.

SMSU embarked on a 10-5 run to finish the opening quarter in an attempt to spark some momentum going into the next.

Nielsen also had a pair of blocks on the night, while Swanson also had a team-high of three steals.

The Huskies outshot the Mustangs from the perimeter, making nine 3-pointers to SMSU’s six.

The Mustangs finished the night shooting 40% from the field to SCSU’s 46% shooting mark.
