Swanson’s double-double lifts SMSU over Wildcats

WAYNE, Neb. — Audrey Swanson recorded her third consecutive double-double with a team-high 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Southwest Minnesota State University womens basketball team to a 58-46 win over Wayne State on Saturday to close out the regular season.

The Mustangs dominated on the defensive end to create offensive opportunities with 20 points off turnovers, outrebounding the Wildcats 44-30 and grabbing 11 steals to their eight. Wayne State, however, had 10 blocks on the night with five coming from 6-foot-2 senior Rachel Dahlen, but had just 4 points off turnovers.

SMSU had four players total finish in double-figure scoring. Nicole Maenke and Brynn Busse finished with 11 points each, both sharing a team-high of three 3-pointers. Kylan Gerads followed with another 10 points along with eight reobunds.

Maenke had a team-best four steals, as did Swanson with three assists.

SMSU was without starting center Natalie Nielsen, who went down with an injury last week.

The Mustangs led by 10 points at the break, 37-27, and never lost sight of its lead.

The Wildcats cut into an 8-point deficit with about three minutes remaining in the third quarter, 44-36, following back-to-back layups from Kylah vanDonkersgoed and Kelsey Willems.

Gerads finished the quarter with two free throws to put SMSU back ahead by 10, which didn’t get cut any shorter from there.

Wayne State originally started out the game with a 7-2 lead, but the Mustangs took the lead promptly on a 8-2 run with a layup each from Gerads, Busse, Maenke and Wagner.

SMSU finished the night shooting 34% from the field and 35% from deep, and went 7 of 12 in free throws. The Wildcats shot in 35-24% clips, and went 6 of 7 from the foul line.

The Mustangs finish the regular season 16-11 overall and 14-8 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play for fifth place.

SMSU was awarded the fifth-seed for the NSIC Tournament, and will host No. 12 Minnesota Crookston (8-20, 7-15 NSIC) on Wednesday for the first round. The winner will then advance to the NSIC quarterfinals against No. 4 UMary on Sunday in Sioux Falls.

The Mustangs and Golden Eagles met once over the regular season on Jan. 24, resulting in an SMSU 76-66 win behind Swanson’s 20 points and Nielsen’s 14 boards.
