Strong rebounding lifts Vikings in win over YME

Minneota 86, YME 50
MINNEOTA — The Minneota girls basketball team dominated the glass in its Camden Conference matchup against Yellow Medicine East Thursday night. The Vikings built up a 22-6 edge on the offensive boards as they cruised to an 86-50 win.
Bayli Sneller scored her 1,000th career point for YME in the loss. She finished the night with 9 points, second on the team behind Bailey Mortenson’s 17 points on 8 of 14 shooting.
Jaylyn Coequyt and Jayla Jerzak led the Vikings’ efforts on the offensive glass with four offensive rebounds each, followed by another three apiece from Leah Coequyt, Ava Rost and Libby Sussner. Rost’s seven total rebounds were also a team-high.
Jaylyn Coequyt finished as Minneota’s leading scorer with 18 points on 8 of 19 shooting. Jerzak and Autum Anderson also finished in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively, with Anderson also making a defensive impact with five steals.
Mortenson grabbed 12 total and five offensive rebounds for YME, and also blocked a shot while Alana Almich blocked two.
Minneota (14-7) plays the second of three consecutive home games when it hosts Renville County West (4-14) tonight at 7 p.m.
Yellow Medicine East (6-15) aims to end its five-game skid when it goes on the road to take on RCW on Monday at 7:15 p.m.
Lakeview 60, TMB 51
COTTONWOOD — Brynn Stenrud’s team-high 27 points on 55% shooting helped the Lakeview girls basketball team stave off Tracy-Milroy-Balaton for a 60-51 competitive Camden Conference win Monday night. Stensrud had the hot hand from deep, going 4 for 8 from the perimeter.
TMB was down by 8 points at the break, and despite a tough second-half push, the Panthers couldn’t quite overcome the deficit down the stretch.
Both teams finished with 17 steals, and the Lakers slightly outrebounded the Panthers 34-33.
Schmidt followed with a near double-double of 11 points and led the Lakers with nine rebounds and two blocks.
Addy Jorgenson, Brook Gunlogson and Aubrey Nething each shared a team-high of three steals.
Gunlogson also finished the night with 10 points to her team-leading five assists along with four rebounds.
For the Panthers, Gretchen Lanoue led the way and filled the stat sheet with team-highs of 20 points, eight steals and eight rebounds, and shot 6 of 6 from the charity stripe.
Melainka Ankrum had a team-high nine assists along with 7 points and three steals.
Both Gretchen and Lauren Knakmuhs had two 3-pointers on the night as well.
Lakeview (19-5) plays its final regular-season road game on Monday against Minneota (14-7) at 7:30 p.m.
Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (8-14) takes on the tall task of facing off against No. 10 Hills-Beaver Creek (17-3) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Dawson-Boyd 69, Ortonville 32
ORTONVILLE — Claire Stratmoen’s red-hot shooting propelled the Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team to a Camden Conference win on Thursday. The sophomore guard nearly matched Ortonville’s team scoring total by herself as the Blackjacks coasted to a 69-32 win.
Stratmoen finished the night with 30 points on 12 of 22 shooting, knocking down three of her six attempts from 3-point range. Her six steals were also a team-high and her five rebounds trailed only Alivia Estling’s nine and Kylar Hjelmeland’s seven.
Hjelmeland also converted six of her 12 field goal attempts for 16 points while Estling added another 12 points.
Stratmoen and Estling each blocked a shot in the game, while Hjelmeland contributed five assists and five steals.
Dawson-Boyd (10-12) continues its push to finish the season at .500 when it hosts Lac qui Parle Valley (4-15) on Monday at 7 p.m.
Canby 58, RCW 26
CANBY — The Canby girls basketball team picked up a dominant 58-26 win in its final home game of the season Thursday night against Renville County West. Brynn Kockelman led the Lancers in the Camden Conference matchup, finishing with 21 points behind five 3-pointers, along with eight rebounds.
Ava Danielson followed with 13 points on 63% shooting with a team-high 11 rebounds.
Jordyn Jostock led Canby with four assists and two steals along with her 7 points, and Jada VanEngen also grabbed another six boards for the Lancers.
Emily Nelson finished with 8 points with a pair of 3-pointers.
Canby (10-12) aims to inch closer to .500 down the final stretch of the season when it heads to Tracy to take on Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (8-14) on Monday at 7:15 p.m.
