Slow second half sinks Marshall at No. 2 Stewartville, 80-70

No. 2 Stewartville 80, No. 4 Marshall 70
STEWARTVILLE — The fourth-ranked Marshall girls basketball team was handed its third loss of the season on Saturday in a top-5 battle with No. 2 Stewartville, coming up short 80-70. Marshall had a 44-36 lead at halftime, but were held to just 26 points in the second half.
Reese Drake led the Tigers with 26 points, and shared a team-high six rebounds with Danielle Nubile, who also finished with 9 points.
Taleigha Bigler followed with 19 points, along with team-highs of four assists and four steals.
Marshall ultimately was outrebounded 33-24, and shot 43% from the field to Stewartville’s 55% mark.
Stewartville gave up 16 turnovers and had six steals, while Marshall protected the ball better with 10 turnovers along with 10 steals.
Stewartville also had three players score double figures.
Marshall moves to 16-3 on the season, and will look to get back on track when it takes on New Ulm on the road on Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
BOLD 81,
Minneota 73
BIRD ISLAND — The Minneota girls basketball team had five players finish in double-figure scoring, but couldn’t quite finish the job in an 81-73 loss to BOLD Monday night on the road. The Warriors’ Lilly Henriksen, a sophomore, finished with 36 points, seven rebounds and six steals.
Jaylyn Coequyt led the Vikings with 23 points and 10 rebounds, and shot 63% from the field.
Eden Meagher followed with another 12 points and six rebounds, while Autum Anderson, Sarah Gruenes and Jayla Jerzak followed with 11 points each.
BOLD challenged Minneota defensively with 17 steals, while the Vikings had five, and held a slight 34-32 rebounding advantage.
The Warriors also shot 18 of 26 from the foul line along with seven 3-pointers, while Minneota went 10 of 13 in free throws and 3 for 7 from deep.
The Vikings were previously on a five-game win streak ahead of Monday.
Minneota (13-7) will return home and look to get back in the win column against Yellow Medicine East (6-14) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
MCC 69,
Adrian/Ellsworth 65
SLAYTON — Ava Deacon and Reese Gilbertson combined for 39 points to help the Murray County Central girls basketball team hold off Adrian/Ellsworth’s second-half push in a 69-65 win Monday night.
The Rebels built a 37-25 lead going into the break, and despite being outscored in the second half, were able to hone in on the defensive end to prevail for the win.
MCC had 22 steals to A/E’s 14, and forced 29 turnovers while giving up 24 themselves.
Deacon finished with a team-high 25 points and shot 8 for 10 from the free throw line, along with six steals.
Gilberston followed with 14 points and led with seven rebounds, with another four steals. Both her and Deacon led the team with a trio of 3-pointers.
Kate Blankenship led the facilitating with seven assists, along with her five rebounds and five points.
MCC (10-9) will next look to pick up its fourth-straight win when it travels to Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (11-8) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
No. 10 HBC 65,
RRC 21
LAMBERTON — The Red Rock Central girls basketball team fell short of the win column on Saturday, dropping 65-21 against No. 10 Hills-Beaver Creek in Red Rock Conference play.
Paige Wondercheck led RRC with 9 points and six rebounds in the loss.
Red Rock Central drops to 0-22 with the loss and next competes on Friday when it heads to Fulda for a matchup against Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (10-10) at 7 p.m.
RTR 62,
Edgerton 43
TYLER — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls basketball team had a trio of scorers reach at least 14 points on Monday night as the Knights ran away with a 62-43 win over Edgerton.
Ava Guida led the RTR scorers with 21 points on the night, followed by 19 points from Brezlyn Buchert and another 14 from Makayla Hesse.
RTR improves to 12-9 on the year with the win and goes on the road with the hopes of upsetting No. 10 Hills-Beaver Creek (17-3) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
